ARRI celebrates ten years of its mighty ALEXA. This camera was trusted on countless productions and by the world’s top filmmakers. Check out the 10 years ALEXA reel and more interesting facts about this camera.
10 years of ALEXA: 10 cameras – Same sensor
The ARRI Alexa (stylized as ΛLEXΛ) is a digital motion picture camera system made by ARRI first introduced in April 2010. The camera was ARRI’s first major transition into digital cinematography. Since then, ARRI kept innovating the ALEXA and developed more models by aiming at higher resolution and sensor size. However, the most fascinating fact is that the sensor has not changed. Well, it’s logical since you will not replace your winning horse. In total, ARRI has manufactured 10 ALEXA cameras: Classic, Plus 4:3, M, Studio, XT, 65, Mini, SXT, LF, and the Mini LF.

Build quality and reliability
Along with stunning image quality, easy workflows, and an intuitive menu structure, one of the major appeals of the ARRI ALEXA for professional filmmakers has been its exceptionally high build quality. The ALEXA cameras can be used in the most extreme conditions and will continue to work. Many early models have logged more than 10,000 operational hours when they come in for a service. Have a look at the ARRI Certified Pre-Owned program that owns many ALEXA cameras with more than 5000 operational hours.
Oscars and awards
Apart from Netflix, ALEXA cameras dominate the Academy Awards and major film festivals.
Explore the charts below that we’ve created that show the statistics regarding cameras used on last year’s Oscar, Sundance, and the Golden Globe Awards. You’ll notice that ALEXA cameras lead the way.
ALEXA ecosystem, cameras, and lenses: Getting educated
The best way to get educated regarding the ALEXA is to take one of the ARRI Academy certified courses. There are two certified courses: The ARRI Certified Training for Camera Systems (click here for our review) and the ARRI Certified Online Training for Large-Format Camera System (click here for our review).
