Panasonic S1H – The mirrorless that paved the way

The Panasonic S1H was the first mirrorless to be approved by Netflix. In fact, it is the sole mirrorless in that prestigious list. Read more on Netflix’s List and the Panasonic S1H: A Foothold for Mirrorless Cameras. The video capabilities of this small camera are truly impressive. For less than $4,000 you are getting a decent feature set and solid spec list, optimized for filmmaking. The S1H is distinguished by its ability to record 10-bit 6K (5952 x 3968) video at 24.00 in 3:2 format using nearly the full area of the full-frame sensor, along with 5.9K (5888 x 3312) video at 29.97p in 16:9. Also, S1H uses the Dual Native ISO settings that prioritize either low noise or low sensitivity in order to realize imagery quality with greater color fidelity and reduced noise.

Firmware version 2.0

Firmware version 2.0 was supposed to allow RAW video output over HDMI at up to 5.9K at 29.97 fps or DCI 4K at 59.94 fps. However, this major feature is being delayed. The firmware ver 2.0 includes some other enhanced video functions and improved performances as described below:

  1. Downconverted output over HDMI during [6K]/[5.9K]/[5.4K] video recording is available.
  2. In Creative Video mode, it is possible to disable the operation of starting/stopping video recording by pressing a shutter button.
  3. In Creative Video mode, it is possible to set [Rec Quality(My List)] from the control panel.
  4. The value of noise reduction in [V-Log] in Photo Style has been expanded to [-1]. It suppresses afterimages previously occurred in some situations.
  5. It is possible to prevent the enlarged view window of MF Assist to be output over HDMI.
  6. There were cases where color banding appeared in 4:2:0/10-bit video recording in some situations. This bug has been minimized.
  7. There were cases where the REC RUN time code did not count up when the video was not recorded on an SD Memory Card but was recorded on an external device over HDMI. This bug has been fixed.

The firmware version 2.0 of the DC-S1H can be downloaded from here.

An unforeseen technical issue has come to light in the final rounds of beta testing that needs rectification before shipping. The companies are working together to complete the development as soon as possible.

Atomos Ninja V and LUMIX S1H RAW firmware delay

The reason for delaying the release of the ProRes RAW recording capability was explained on Atomos’ press release. As stated by Atomos: “The firmware updates enabling the much-anticipated Atomos Ninja V and Panasonic LUMIX S1H RAW over HDMI combination has unfortunately been slightly delayed from the original 25th May release schedule, to ensure the highest possible level of RAW recording. An unforeseen technical issue has come to light in the final rounds of beta testing that needs rectification before shipping. The companies are working together to complete the development as soon as possible. We apologize to our mutual customers waiting for the functions this release enables”. From that press release we can assume that this feature will be pushed on the next S1H firmware update (2.1?), so no panic. In case you are not familiar with this feature, check out Atomos educational video below by Atomos Academy that shows how to setup ProRes RAW on the LUMIX S1H + Ninja V.

5.9K ProRes RAW on the LUMIX S1H

Atomos has presented a case study showing the advantages of 5.9K ProRes RAW recording on the S1H via the Atomos Ninja V on-set. Check out the behind-the-scenes video below, about the making of the short film ‘Blind Love’:

This fast-moving drama showcases the full-frame 5.9K RAW shooting capabilities of the Panasonic LUMIX S1H and Ninja V 5″ HDR monitor-recorder. The film was shot on location by Polish director of photography Krzysztof Sieniawski and his small team of indie filmmakers in just one day. It was filmed entirely in 5.9K Apple ProRes RAW, using one camera in basic handheld and gimbal setups. The combination of the Ninja V and LUMIX S1H allows users the privilege to record 4K 10-bit ProRes video for fast turnaround projects or full-frame 5.9K 12-bit ProRes RAW direct from the camera’s sensor for more creative flexibility and HDR delivery.  Check out the final version of ‘Blind Love’ below:

 Firmware updates needed

The Ninja V will support the LUMIX S1H 5.9K ProRes RAW recording with the free AtomOS 10.5 update from the Atomos website. As for Panasonic, as explained, the feature will be implemented in the next firmware update. To sum it up: To capture ProRes RAW you need to buy the Panasonic S1H ($3,998) and the Atomos Ninja V 5″ 4K HDMI Recording Monitor ($500). After installing the anticipated firmware update, you will be able to shoot that desired ProRes RAW.

12-bit RAW on a mirrorless

The Ninja V captures highly detailed 12-bit RAW files from the S1H over HDMI at up to 5.9K/29.97p in Full-frame or 4K/59.94p in Super35 (when the firmware is ready). These unprocessed files are extremely clean, preserving the maximum dynamic range, color accuracy, and every detail from the S1H. The resulting ProRes RAW files allow for greater creativity in post-production with perfect skin tones and easily matched colors, ideal for both HDR and SDR (Rec.709) workflows. 1. Too bad RAW HDMI it’s not yet available. I wonder if it will be possible to use this camera with Shogun Inferno instead of the Ninja V for ProRes RAW recording.

    • Atomos has said raw over HDMI will work on Ninja V, Shogun 7, Shogun Inferno, SUMO 19, or NEON. It’ll be the Ninja only for a while I think. And as always with Atomos, they deliver what they promise, but it takes a long time for some updates to be released. So it should work in the future, but there’s no timeframe.
