Canon Says: “Use an External Fan to Dissipate Heat”, so Tilta Invents the “R5 Cooling Kit”

Tilta has announced a new “Cooling Kit” for the Canon EOS R5. This cooling module was created to extend recording times and help mitigate overheating, as Tilta explains. This option can be an answer to Canon’s solution (“Use an External Fan to Dissipate Heat”) for those who want to shoot 8K RAW on the R5. Read more below.

Canon EOS R5 Recording Times Specifications (=limitations)

As you already heard, one of the major burdens regarding the newly announced Canon EOS R5 is the recording times limitations regarding heat accumulations. The EOS R5 is armed with an impressive specs list that allows shooting 8K full-frame uncropped RAW videos. However, there are heavy recording time restrictions due to the lack of fans and cooling apparatus. Below you can find a slide that demonstrates the maximum shooting times during room temperature. Tilta’s new cooling module

From first sight, this product looks like a joke. However, Tilta just did what Canon asked for: “Use an External Fan”. So Tilta has invented a sophisticated fan with the branded name: “R5 Cooling Module”. Tilta states that the module was created to extend recording times and help mitigate EOS R5 overheating. According to Tilta, the module which combines a fan, heat sink, and temperature sensor easily be installed on the rear side of the R5. Furthermore, the module will activate as needed and can be removed with ease. The cooling module can reduce camera temperature to 59F (15C) in one minute.

We can guess that this module can reduce the temperature from 25 to 15 centigrade in one minute. Will it extend the 8K RAW FF recording times on the EOS R5? There is no answer to that.

Ket features of the cooling module

  1. The fan speed is 6200 RPM which is quite high.
  2. The noise level is 34 dB
  3. Modular maximum temperature reduction: 76F (25C)
  4. Reduces temperature to 59F (15C) within one minute
  5. Maximum temperature reduction 82F (28C)
  6. The temperature auto-detection triggers the control switch prevents the camera from producing over cooling moisture.

It must take into consideration that this aggressive cooling system will produce loud noise (34 dB, 6200 RPM) and also, might impacting the stabilization as well.

From 25 to 15 centigrade in one minute

There is no info regarding price nor availability. Also, there is no demonstration. At this stage, this product seems more theoretical than practical. Moreover, the technical specifications of the heat reduction performances are not clear. We can guess that this module can reduce the temperature from 25 to 15 centigrade in one minute. Will it extend the 8K RAW FF recording times on the EOS R5? There is no answer to that. Besides, if we read between the lines, the module should not be working on warm environments above 28 centigrade, which means this cooling module has limited capabilities. However, it does not seem like April Fools’ Day. Tilta has made a cooling module before. Also, this company makes pretty crazy stuff, so it’s for real.

Thoughts

The cooling module will be built into a dedicated cage, that contains a battery (for power supplying the vent) and supports the cooling apparatus. Furthermore, it must take into consideration that this aggressive cooling system will produce loud noise (34 dB, 6200 RPM) and also, might impacting the stabilization as well. We don’t have any data regarding the shakiness derived from this module. to sum it up, we need more information and particularly more demonstrations to see it in action and to decide, if this invention is going to be practical in the field.
