Nolan: “IMAX is the highest quality imaging format ever devised”
Another day, another article about the ultra-anticipated Oppenheimer. Shot with IMAX film cameras, by the IMAX enthusiast Christopher Nolan, who stated: “IMAX film brings images to life. From resolution and color to sharpness and overall quality, there is nothing compared to using IMAX film cameras. The IMAX film format is the Gold Standard of motion picture photography. It’s the highest-quality of imaging format ever devised. It gives you an incredible sense of immersion in the image. The clarity, the crispness…it is the gold standard. It’s the closest reproduction of the world the way that your eye sees it”. So, will you make it to watch Oppenheimer in the proper format it was captured?
Might be worthwhile to know that, when I watched Dunkirk in Prague, the theatre was projecting IMAX digitally only.
So as far as this list goes „Experience Oppenheimer in IMAX 70mm Film only at the select locations listed below“, and the Flora theatre in Prague, I doubt the digital projection was upgraded to film since.
Furthermore I would doubt the list has widened. Expect digital in more and more theatres, not 70mm.
just send Flora IMAX an Email at callcenter(at)cinemacity.cz and they will tell you 🙂
Did you get a reply?
If this is addressed to me, as was the reply:
no, since I didn‘t ask a question, I made a statement. And given development I highly question that an IMAX film projector made it in there since Dunkirk.
There is no need for me to further investigate my experience.
Would be interesting to know in general if IMAX film projection has widened at all.
And no pun intended, but that would be more useful than posting an email that I used before.
Too bad for you if that’s somehow really the case. They did most certainly screen the 70mm film version then and will again this time. Back in 2017 it was shown in 39 theatres globally.
Yes
Definitely… If Chris buys my plane ticket and accommodations 😉
Saw Dunkirk in 70mm in W Palm Beach FL but like Hateful 8, projector optics didn’t have sharpness of 70mm in Los Angeles. 70mm Imax in Ft. Lauderdale better optics but the format with expanded vertical sections still lacks the you-are-there impact of 70mm curved-screen Cinerama with its horizontal emphasis on audience participation. The ‘psychology’ aspect of 65mm close-ups of faces was touted by Cinerama President Nicholas Reisini in 1964 for The Greatest Story Ever Told as a new way to see into the soul of a character. Indeed, some shots of Max von Sydow in TGSET possessed that quality, as did Keir Dullea in 2001: A Space Odyssey. Oppenheimer likely will as well.
In response to Michael and Adam, who seems to have recently replied to this (but somehow is not visible to me), I sent an email now to Flora cinema in Prague to ask why Dunkirk was digital and not film back then as well as if Oppenheimer is truly a film projection now and if so, when they did upgrade.
I stand by my (professional) opinion that the projection was digital.
Oppenheimer is advertised as IMAX 70mm on Floras webpage (as was Dunkirk).
What about the World’s Tallest IMAX at Royal Cinemas in Pooler, Ga.? What does it have in comparison to those on the list? https://www.royalcinemaspooler.com/movie/Oppenheimer%5FThe%5FWorlds%5FTallest%5FIMAX%5FExperience
