Stargazers brothers, Zander and Elliot, who are also independent filmmakers, have decided to utilize the Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 6K Pro, to capture the moon at 6K BRAW. The result presents outstanding imagery of the moon. Explore it below.
From micro to space with the Pocket 6K Pro
We’ve reported here previously on the utilization of the Blackmagic Pocket 6K Cinema Camera on micro-filmmaking, capturing insects in extremely high details. In that case, microscope lenses were attached to the Pocket 6K Pro. However, now the opposite is being presented. Independent filmmakers Elliot and Zander, have decided to use the Pocket 6K Pro to capture the moon.
Elliot and Zander are stargazers having worked with NASA on many documentaries and shot a sci-fi space feature called Cosmos. In this case, the microscope lenses were replaced by a telescope that is equivalent to a 1350mm lens.
Telescope (1350mm lens) on the Pocket 6K Pro
The Blackmagic Pocket 6K Pro was attached to the back of a professional Celestron telescope (costs about $1,000), which is equivalent to a 1350mm lens. The goal was to take a closeup of the moon. The Pocket 6K Pro was attached to the Celestron via a special adapter specifically designed for astro-photography. Very simple… very straightforward setup. Then the team has been waiting for a clear night in the UK where the moon is high in the sky to reduce atmospheric heat haze.
Have look at the video below that demonstrates this simple setup:
Capturing the moon
The moon was captured perfectly. Elliot and Zander recorded on BRAW (Blackmagic RAW) 5:1 compression rate, in 6144×3456 resolution. The results are outstanding with an extremely sharp and detailed capture of the moon. Of course, NDs were not needed. The Pocket 6K Pro owns a Super 35 sensor, and thus they didn’t get the full shot of the moon. Nevertheless, the final images speak for themselves. Watch the screen-grab below which shows a fraction of the total image. Notice the high details captured:
