Dune Part Three is a go

Dune: Part Three is coming sooner than audiences think after the thrilling conclusion of Dune: Part Two, Director Denis Villeneuve has revealed that he’s already writing the third movie, based on the novel Dune: Messiah. “The screenplay’s in progress, and I’m very happy where it’s going, but it’s not finished, and I don’t know how healthy it’ll be to go straight to ‘Messiah’ right away. It would be healthy to do something in between. Also, I want to make sure that if we go back there a third time it’ll be worth it, and that it would make something even better than Part Two”. Indeed, it has been reported that Dune Part Three is in development. However, we don’t know if Dune’s legendary cinematographer, Greig Fraser ACS, ASC will be the DP. We hope he will. Anyway, it’s time to consider shooting Dune Part Three on a real IMAX camera Hence, why not shoot it with the new 2nd generation of the IMAX film cameras?

New 65mm film beasts

It seems that Villeneuve likes the film looks as he did all he could to preserve the look & feel of celluloid. In Dune Part One, they scan the ARRI ALEXA LF ARRIRAW output to film and then rescan it back to digital. In Part Two they made a few versions of 70mm out of the ARRI 65’s ARRIRAW. And here, in Part Three, they have the new IMAX film cameras ready for use. In fact, IMAX stated that they are getting very close to having the prototype out in the hands of DPs very shortly. So there you go. Fraser, get one of these new 65mm beasts to shoot Dune Part Three. PLEASE! IMAX said that these new cameras are made out of mostly composite materials, carbon fiber, honeycomb sandwich panels, the same stuff that your Formula One is made out of. And titanium, the same stuff that jet fighters are actually made out of. And besides the body is getting new optics, a five-inch full-color display for user interaction, and wireless connectivity. Sounds perfect for Dune Part Three.

Imagine Dune Part Three shot in real IMAX film cameras

The new 2nd generation of IMAX film cameras can be utilized even in dialog scenes. Furthermore, their interface and user-friendly design make them appropriate to use in harsh environments and production (desert anymore?) Moreover, we know Fraser likes the IMAX’s expanded aspect ratio which helped him capture the desert in its all glory. So Fraser, here is your chance! Grab an IMAX prototype and start doing 65mm magic with it. Dune Part Three is the perfect project for it. Don’t you think?

  1. I’d be ecstatic if they shot in on IMAX film cameras (the only real IMAX format). Heck, I’d even be ecstatic if they shot it on 35mm film and did blow-up 70mm prints for its release, as well as standard 35mm prints. I’m so tired of digital capture/projection and what its done to the “feel” of today’s movies. It’s all wrong.
