Joker 2 Deserves 2 Oscars: Cinematography and Best Actor

So we saw Joker 2 (Joker: Folie à Deux), and it was outstanding. WE LOVED IT! The visuals are just stunning, and we praise Lawrence Sher for that. He chose just right with the ARRI ALEXA 65, which spreads the medium-format look and super-shallow DOF shots all over the movie. Joaquin Phoenix’s acting is phenomenal. Hence, this movie deserves at least two Oscars: one for Cinematography and the other for Best Actor.

Joker 2 is a strong movie. Do not listen to the bad critics. Go see it on IMAX.

Joker 2: Oscars for Best Cinematography

Joker 2 was shot by cinematographer Lawrence Sher, ASC, who wanted to shoot the movie on IMAX film cameras. However, Sher chose the ARRI ALEXA 65 instead. Indeed, the choice of the ARRI 65 for IMAX screening is significant. The ALEXA 65 has unparalleled image quality, delivering sharpness, dynamic range, and a sense of grandeur. Sher’s use of this camera allows for expansive visuals, and large-scale, immersive shots, which are key in providing emotional depth and spectacle to the film’s darker themes. The movie contains many face shots, with incredibly shallow depth of field. Furthermore, the ARRI 65 captures minute details, particularly in the lighting and texture of the Gotham environment, which enhances the mood and immerses the audience in the world of Arthur Fleck. Sher successfully paired the film’s emotional and psychological depth with the stunning ARRI 65 imagery and musical choreography demanded in “Joker 2”. Hence, Sher can be a strong candidate for Best Cinematography Oscars.

Oner as a bonus

BTW, there’s an amazing Oner (Long Take) shot at the end of the movie. There’s a chance that this ‘oner’ was shot with the  VENICE 2 Rialto (which was used alongside the ARRI 65). The oner was perfectly executed.

Joker 2: Oscars for Best Actor

Joaquin Phoenix certainly deserves an Oscar for “Joker 2” as he continues to push the boundaries of the character and embraces the new musical elements in a way that adds depth to Arthur Fleck’s evolution. In his portrayal, he taps into new emotional and psychological depths while showcasing his ability to perform musically alongside Lady Gaga, and that could lead to another award-worthy performance. In our opinion, the Best Actor Oscar 2025 goes to Phoenix.
