Canon has published its Second Quarter 2022 Results, and the Analyst Meeting Q&A Session Summary. These are the takeaways: Canon prioritizes full-frame mirrorless cameras, expects the market of professional and advanced amateurs to continue to expand, and promises to continue the supply of DSLRs as long as there is a demand.
Prioritization of full-frame mirrorless cameras
Canon 2Q 2022 presentation and Analyst Meeting sessions have been published. In between the lines, we can find a few intriguing key points. For instance, a prioritization regarding the manufacturing of full-frame mirrorless cameras. As stated b Canon: “In the second quarter, while the shortage of products supply caused camera body unit sales to continue to be below those of last year, we expect to turn to increase as production recovers from the second half of the year. Even under a situation of declining unit sales, we raised the ratio of full-frame mirrorless cameras for which we prioritize production and sales and significantly increased RF lens sales to post a double-digit increase in net sales overall”.
The goal of R7 and R10
Furthermore, Canon indicated that lower-end mirrorless cameras were developed in order to help DSLR users to migrate to mirrorless. “To further enhance our EOS R System, we will launch the EOS R7 and EOS R10. While these two models incorporate APS-C sensors, they also inherit, among others, the autofocus subject detection technology of our high-end model, the EOS R3, and offer high performance in all aspects for still image and video capture. We expect professional and advanced amateurs to, for example, use these as sub-cameras, and that it will also encourage people to replace their SLR cameras or step-up from entry-class cameras. With these cameras and the launch of two RF-S lenses, we will work to further increase the number of users who adopt our system”.
Canon will supply DSLRs according to the demand
As a part of the Analyst Meeting Q&A Session, a very interesting question has been raised: “What is your outlook for the camera market going forward? Additionally, will you continue to offer both Mirrorless and DSLR cameras?”. And this was Canon’s answer: “The camera market has largely bottomed out at its current size. Going forward, we expect the professional and advanced amateur segment to expand further and those products will because more highly developed. Accordingly, we expect the overall market to grow from now on. As for DSLR cameras, we will continue to supply products as long as there is demand”.

Closing thoughts
Canon has already made it clear that the 1D X Mark III is the last DSLR flagship. Nevertheless, Canon continues to support DSLR bodies, and also the flagship remains in stock, which means Canon is still manufacturing those. But in parallel, Canon makes huge efforts to strengthen its mirrorless system by helping SLR users to migrate from DSLR to mirrorless. To do so, Canon develops full-frame mirrorless flagships (R3 for instance) and then implements their technologies (like AF) in lower-end mirrorless cameras (with smaller sensors). However, Canon understands that there’s a need for DSLR, and as long as this need exists, Canon promises to fulfill it. Having said that, at some point Canon will have to completely halt DSLR production, and this day is not far away.
