Sigma FP2: 6K Open Gate in a Tiny Full-Frame Camera

Sigma has announced the FP2, the latest addition to its unusually compact full-frame mirrorless camera lineup. The new model combines a 24.5MP partially stacked CMOS sensor with 6K Open Gate recording, Apple ProRes RAW support, improved autofocus, and a modular design aimed at both photographers and filmmakers. Priced at $2,199, the FP2 continues Sigma’s approach of fitting professional imaging capabilities into one of the smallest full-frame camera bodies available. It also marks a substantial technical upgrade over the original Sigma fp ($1,740 on Amazon) and fp L.

A partially stacked sensor in a compact body

The FP2 is built around a new 24.5MP partially stacked full-frame CMOS sensor. Unlike the original fp cameras, the updated sensor architecture offers faster readout speeds, which Sigma says significantly reduce rolling shutter distortion while enabling higher frame rates and improved autofocus performance. The camera supports continuous still photography at up to 20 fps and introduces improved subject-detection autofocus, including recognition of people, animals, and birds. Despite these upgrades, Sigma has retained the minimalist, rectangular design that distinguishes the fp series. The camera weighs approximately 376 grams without the battery and memory card, making it particularly suitable for compact rigs, gimbals, drones, and situations where camera size is an important consideration. The FP2 also introduces a tilting rear LCD, replacing the fixed display found on the original fp models. An optional electronic viewfinder is available for photographers and filmmakers who prefer eye-level operation.

6K Open Gate and ProRes RAW recording

For filmmakers, the most important addition is 6K Open Gate recording. The FP2 can capture video using the full 3:2 sensor area, providing additional flexibility for anamorphic shooting, reframing, and generating multiple aspect ratios from a single recording. The camera supports 6K recording at up to 59.94 fps using compressed codecs, while Apple ProRes RAW and ProRes RAW HQ are supported at resolutions up to 6K/29.97p through an external USB-C SSD. Other recording options include 4K at up to 60p and cropped 4K at up to approximately 120p. Sigma also introduces L-Log recording and claims up to 14.1 stops of dynamic range, although independent testing will be required to establish the camera’s actual imaging latitude. Additional professional features include a dedicated CINE interface, shutter-angle controls, monitoring tools, and a Director’s Viewfinder function. The camera also supports 32-bit float audio recording when connected to compatible optional audio accessories. The FP2 includes approximately 70GB of internal storage, an SDXC UHS-II card slot, USB-C connectivity, and full-size HDMI output. For filmmakers assembling compact camera systems, these options provide considerable flexibility, although high-data-rate RAW recording still requires additional storage hardware.

How does the FP2 compare with the original Sigma fp and fp L?

Sigma introduced the original fp in 2019 as an exceptionally compact 24.6MP full-frame camera with a strong emphasis on modularity and cinema production. Its support for 12-bit CinemaDNG recording to an external SSD made it attractive to filmmakers seeking an affordable RAW-capable full-frame camera. The fp L followed in 2021, increasing sensor resolution to 61MP and adding phase-detection autofocus. However, both models remained limited to 4K video recording and lacked the newer high-speed sensor architecture found in the FP2. The FP2 takes a different direction from the high-resolution fp L. Rather than increasing megapixels, Sigma has prioritized sensor readout, video resolution, frame rates, autofocus, and usability.

Feature Sigma fp Sigma fp L Sigma FP2
Release 2019 2021 2026
Sensor 24.6MP full-frame 61MP full-frame 24.5MP partially stacked
Maximum video resolution 4K 4K 6K Open Gate
RAW recording CinemaDNG CinemaDNG ProRes RAW
Autofocus Contrast detection Hybrid phase detection Improved subject detection
LCD Fixed Fixed Tilting
Internal storage None None 70GB

The original fp cameras established Sigma’s compact cinema-oriented platform, while the FP2 brings that platform closer to the capabilities expected of modern professional hybrid cameras. The fp L still offers considerably more resolution for photography, but the FP2 is clearly the more advanced video-focused option.

A different approach to full-frame filmmaking

The FP2 enters a market populated by capable compact full-frame cameras, including the Panasonic Lumix S5IIX ($1,797.99 on Amazon), Sony FX3 ($4,298 on Amazon), and Blackmagic Cinema Camera 6K. These cameras approach filmmaking differently. The Sony FX3 emphasizes professional video ergonomics, active cooling, and reliable autofocus. Panasonic’s S5IIX provides a more conventional hybrid design with in-body stabilization and extensive recording options. Blackmagic’s Cinema Camera 6K prioritizes dedicated cinema workflows, including Blackmagic RAW and a larger integrated touchscreen. Sigma’s FP2 instead emphasizes physical size and modularity. Its 6K Open Gate capability, partially stacked sensor, and ProRes RAW support create an interesting combination for productions that need a compact full-frame camera. However, its lack of in-body image stabilization and built-in electronic viewfinder remains a practical consideration. Filmmakers will also need to assess rolling shutter, sustained recording performance, thermal behavior, and image quality before drawing conclusions about its suitability for demanding production environments.

Sigma’s strategy: Small, powerful, adaptable

The FP2 reflects Sigma’s continuing commitment to a camera philosophy that differs from the conventional mirrorless market. Rather than integrating every possible feature into a larger body, Sigma emphasizes a compact imaging core that can be expanded according to the production’s requirements. This approach allows the same camera to operate as a minimal handheld system, a lightweight gimbal camera, or the center of a more elaborate cinema rig. It also suggests that Sigma sees value in maintaining a distinctive product category rather than competing directly with Sony, Canon, and Panasonic on conventional hybrid-camera design. The inclusion of a partially stacked sensor and 6K Open Gate recording demonstrates that compact dimensions do not necessarily have to limit advanced acquisition features. Nevertheless, the FP2’s modular architecture means that a fully configured shooting system can become substantially larger and more expensive than the camera body itself.

Price and availability

The Sigma FP2 will be available starting November 11, 2026, priced at $2,199 for the body only. Sigma will also offer bundles with either the 50mm F2 DG Contemporary lens ($719 on Amazon) or the EVF-21 electronic viewfinder, each priced at $2,749. For filmmakers already invested in the L-Mount ecosystem, the FP2 offers a notable upgrade over the original fp cameras, particularly in recording resolution and sensor performance. The more interesting question is whether Sigma has managed to combine the advantages of a modern partially stacked sensor with the image quality and recording reliability required for professional cinema production. That will become clearer once independent camera tests and production footage are available.
