The Sony FX5 has reached the No. 1 New Release position in Amazon‘s Professional Grade Video Cameras category. There’s just one problem: The camera is unavailable to buy, and Amazon doesn’t know when it will return. It’s another unusual development in the FX5’s troubled rollout.
No. 1, but no stock
The Sony FX5 has secured Amazon’s #1 New Release badge in the Professional Grade Video Cameras category, despite being listed as unavailable. As of October 13, Amazon’s US product page displays the ranking directly beneath the camera’s name. Just below it, however, the retailer delivers a different message: “Currently unavailable. We don’t know when or if this item will be back in stock.” There’s no price, no estimated shipping date, and no standard purchase option. Instead, Amazon offers an “Add to Auto Buy” button. It’s an unusual situation for a newly announced cinema camera. The FX5 occupies the top position in Amazon’s new-release ranking while customers cannot place a conventional order for it.

The FX5 delivery problem continues
The Amazon ranking comes after months of uncertainty surrounding Sony’s latest full-frame Cinema Line camera. Originally scheduled to ship in August, the FX5 has suffered repeated postponements, with Sony eventually moving its expected release window to late October 2026 or later. As previously reported by Y.M.Cinema in Sony FX5: When Will Buyers Actually Get the Camera?, Amazon had already marked the camera as unavailable in August. At the time, it was unclear whether the retailer had exhausted an initial allocation or simply published the product listing before inventory arrived. Nearly two months later, that uncertainty remains. Other major camera retailers have continued accepting preorders, although estimated delivery dates have varied. Meanwhile, reports of problems involving the FX5’s rear LCD have raised additional questions about the delays. However, Sony has not confirmed that these reported issues are responsible for the postponed shipments.

Does the No. 1 ranking indicate strong demand?
Not necessarily. Amazon’s New Release ranking should not be confused with its overall Best Sellers ranking, nor does the badge reveal how many cameras have actually been sold or delivered. Amazon does not disclose the precise sales data behind this particular position. Consequently, the ranking cannot establish whether the FX5 is selling in substantial quantities, benefiting from earlier preorder activity, or simply leading a category with relatively limited competition among newly listed products. Still, the contrast is worth highlighting. Amazon identifies the Sony FX5 as its leading new release in the category, yet the same product page offers no clear path to immediate purchase.
Final thoughts
The Sony FX5 currently holds two seemingly contradictory positions on Amazon: No. 1 New Release and unavailable to purchase. The ranking is an interesting indicator of the camera’s position within Amazon’s catalog, but it isn’t proof of strong sales or widespread delivery. What is clear is that the FX5’s availability problems have continued well beyond its originally planned launch. Sony has a highly capable cinema camera on its hands. Now it needs to get that camera into customers’ hands.
