Sony FX5 Is Officially Available in India, While Other Markets Still Wait

After nearly three months of delays, the Sony FX5 appears to have reached its first major retail market. Sony India has officially announced that its new Cinema Line camera is now available in the country, even as filmmakers in Japan, Europe, and the United States continue waiting for their orders. The announcement, published on Sony India’s verified Facebook page, introduces an unexpected twist in the FX5’s troubled global rollout.

Sony India confirms availability

Sony India’s official Facebook page has published a promotional announcement for the FX5, accompanied by a product image and the message: “Available in India now”. The announcement is particularly noteworthy because it comes directly from Sony’s verified regional account, rather than a retailer, distributor, or unofficial source. Moreover, when a Facebook user asked when the camera would arrive in India, Sony India responded that the FX5 was available at authorized Sony stores and directed the customer to its official dealer locator. The Indian launch has also been confirmed by local technology publications, which report that sales officially began on November 2, 2026. The body-only FX5B is priced at ₹509,990, while the FX5 configuration with the XLR handle is priced at ₹561,990. There is, however, an interesting inconsistency: Sony India’s own product catalog still displays an “Available Soon” label for the FX5. Furthermore, an official announcement does not necessarily confirm that every authorized dealer has inventory ready for immediate delivery.

What happened to the 13-week delay?

The Indian announcement is especially interesting considering the FX5’s complicated release history. As previously reported by YMCinema in Sony FX5 Finally Gets a Release Date After a 13-Week Delay, Sony Japan officially scheduled the camera’s release for November 20, 2026, following several postponements. Originally announced on July 22, the FX5 was supposed to reach the Japanese market on August 21. However, Sony postponed its release just days before launch, citing production-related circumstances. In September, Sony revised its availability estimate to late October or later. It wasn’t until October 28 that the company finally confirmed November 20 as the Japanese release date. We also examined the uncertainty surrounding customer deliveries in our earlier report, Sony FX5: When Will Buyers Actually Get the Camera?. Meanwhile, European Sony stores had indicated November 16 as a shipping date, while US retailers continued accepting preorders with varying delivery expectations. Now, somewhat unexpectedly, India has received an official availability announcement more than two weeks before the scheduled Japanese launch.

Why India first?

This raises an interesting question: Why is Sony announcing availability in India while other major markets are still waiting? Sony has not explained the regional differences in the FX5 rollout. They could reflect inventory allocation, regional distribution arrangements, or differences between official launch dates and actual deliveries. However, none of these possibilities has been confirmed by the manufacturer. What makes the situation particularly unusual is that Japan, Sony’s home market, still has an official November 20 release date.

Final thoughts

After months of delays, the Sony FX5 is finally being officially marketed as available for purchase in at least one major market. For filmmakers waiting to get their hands on Sony’s new full-frame Cinema Line camera, this is an encouraging development. However, the distinction between announced availability and confirmed customer deliveries remains important. Sony India says the FX5 is available now. The next question is whether cameras are actually reaching customers, and how soon the rest of the world will follow.
