With less than two months remaining in 2026, Nikon has reaffirmed its commitment to releasing Firmware 2.0 for the ZR cinema camera before the end of the year. The upcoming update promises significant filmmaking improvements, including RED Log3G10 recording in H.265, advanced noise reduction controls, improved monitoring functionality, and image-quality refinements.

Nikon reiterates its 2026 firmware commitment

Nikon USA has published a fresh statement confirming that Firmware Version 2.0 for the Nikon ZR ($2,196.95 on Amazon) remains scheduled for release before the end of 2026. The announcement, shared on November 4, reiterates the company’s original September commitment while providing a more detailed breakdown of the improvements filmmakers can expect. With fewer than eight weeks remaining in the year, Nikon’s renewed confirmation is particularly relevant to ZR owners awaiting the update. The company describes the upcoming firmware as an enhancement designed for professional filmmakers and emerging storytellers, promising greater creative flexibility and a more streamlined production workflow. However, Nikon has not announced a specific release date.

RED color science without RAW recording

One of the most significant improvements is the introduction of RED’s Log3G10 gamma curve and REDWideGamutRGB color gamut in H.265 recording. Currently, the ZR’s implementation of RED’s color pipeline is closely associated with its R3D NE RAW format. Firmware 2.0 will extend these color-management options to the more storage-efficient H.265 codec. For filmmakers, this means access to a RED-oriented color workflow without the storage requirements associated with RAW acquisition. Although H.265 does not offer the same post-production flexibility as RAW, the combination of RED’s gamma curve and wide color gamut could make the ZR considerably more practical for productions requiring faster turnaround times and smaller recording files.

Improved noise reduction, monitoring, and image quality

Nikon’s latest announcement also details several additional improvements:

  • Four levels of High ISO noise reduction: Available for H.265 with Log3G10, H.265 with N-Log, and ProRes 422 HQ with N-Log.
  • Focus peaking with LUT monitoring: Focus peaking will remain available when a 3D LUT is applied during R3D NE recording.
  • 3D LUT output via HDMI: Filmmakers will be able to apply a 3D LUT to the camera’s HDMI output for external monitoring.
  • Reduced black-level fluctuations: Nikon promises to suppress black-level fluctuations to reduce visible flicker in dark image areas.
  • Expanded camera customization: Additional customization options for command dials and function buttons.

The black-level improvement is particularly interesting, as it addresses image consistency rather than simply introducing another recording or monitoring feature. Its effectiveness will become clearer once the update is released and tested.

Open Gate will have to wait until 2027

Despite the improvements planned for Firmware 2.0, Open Gate recording is not part of the upcoming release. Nikon has previously confirmed that Open Gate recording and anamorphic desqueeze display functionality are under development, with implementation targeted for 2027. The distinction is important for cinematographers considering the ZR for anamorphic productions or projects requiring flexible aspect-ratio extraction. Meanwhile, RED is also developing compatibility with its RED CONTROL and RED CONTROL PRO applications, potentially expanding the ZR’s remote operation capabilities.

Nikon continues to develop the ZR

The Nikon ZR was introduced in 2025 as part of Nikon’s expanding Z CINEMA ecosystem, combining the company’s imaging technologies with expertise acquired through RED Digital Cinema. Firmware 2.0 represents another step toward integrating RED’s established cinema workflows into Nikon’s compact camera platform. While most of the headline features were initially announced in September, Nikon’s November 4 communication reinforces its commitment to delivering the update within the original timeframe and provides further technical details. The remaining question is when Nikon will actually release it. With the end of 2026 approaching, ZR owners now have another official assurance that Firmware 2.0 is coming this year, although an exact date remains unconfirmed.
