Five years after its introduction, the Sony a7 IV ($1,998 on Amazon) continues to demonstrate remarkable staying power in the full-frame mirrorless market. The camera is positioned as Amazon’s best-selling full-frame mirrorless body, with a current price of $1,998, approximately $500 below its original $2,499.99 price. Even with the newer a7 V ($2,898 on Amazon) available, Sony’s aging hybrid camera remains a compelling choice for photographers and filmmakers.

Five years old and still selling

Sony officially announced the Alpha 7 IV on October 21, 2021. Five years later, the camera continues to attract buyers in a market filled with newer alternatives from Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, and Sony itself. At the time of writing, Amazon lists the a7 IV body at $1,998, representing a 20% reduction from its original list price. The listing also carries Amazon’s Choice designation, a 4.7-star customer rating, and an indication that more than 200 units were purchased during the past month. These figures suggest that the a7 IV remains commercially relevant well beyond the typical launch cycle of a mirrorless camera.

Why the a7 IV still makes sense for filmmakers

Despite its age, the a7 IV retains a respectable set of video specifications. Its 33MP full-frame sensor delivers oversampled 4K footage at up to 30p, while 4K/60p is available in Super 35 mode. Internal 10-bit 4:2:2 recording, S-Log3, S-Cinetone, effective autofocus, and five-axis image stabilization make it a versatile hybrid tool. Of course, the camera has limitations. The substantial crop in 4K/60p, comparatively slow sensor readout, rolling shutter, and lack of internal RAW recording place it behind newer cameras designed for more demanding video production. Nevertheless, for interviews, documentaries, corporate productions, and hybrid photography workflows, the a7 IV still offers a practical combination of image quality, autofocus, and operational flexibility.

The a7 V hasn’t eliminated demand for its predecessor

The commercial longevity of the a7 IV is particularly interesting considering that Sony introduced the a7 V in December 2025. The newer generation brings a partially stacked 33MP sensor, improved processing, faster readout, and more advanced autofocus capabilities. These are substantial technical improvements, particularly for photographers and filmmakers who require greater speed and reduced rolling shutter. However, improvements do not necessarily translate into an immediate replacement cycle. For many buyers, the a7 IV already delivers the image quality and production capabilities they need. Its lower price makes that proposition even more attractive.

The $2,000 full-frame market

The a7 IV also occupies one of the most competitive price segments in the camera industry. As previously reported by YMCinema, the Sony a7 IV, Canon EOS R6 Mark II ($1,999 on Amazon), and Nikon Z6 III ($1,996.95 on Amazon) have all been available at approximately $2,000 on Amazon. Interestingly, these cameras represent different generations and approaches to full-frame hybrid imaging. The a7 IV’s continued popularity suggests that specifications alone do not determine purchasing decisions. Familiarity, lens compatibility, proven reliability, and price can be equally important.

Final thoughts

The Sony a7 IV is no longer a technologically advanced camera by 2026 standards. Yet its continued commercial success illustrates an important reality of the mirrorless market: a mature camera with strong fundamentals can remain relevant long after the arrival of its successor. At $1,998, the a7 IV still offers a credible entry point into Sony’s full-frame E-mount ecosystem. For filmmakers who do not require the latest sensor technology or advanced recording formats, that may be more than enough. The question is not whether the a7 IV is outdated. It is whether most hybrid shooters actually need something newer.
