Z CAM has announced a major firmware update for its E2-F6 Pro cinema camera, adding internal Apple ProRes RAW recording at up to 6K 60fps. The update allows users to capture ProRes RAW directly in the camera without an external recorder, bringing a significant new recording capability to the existing full-frame model.

Internal ProRes RAW at up to 6K 60fps

The announcement was made by Z CAM’s Kinson on the company’s Facebook community page. Kinson confirmed that the latest firmware enables internal ProRes RAW recording at up to 6K 60fps on the E2-F6 Pro. A photograph posted in the discussion shows the camera’s recording menu with two new options: ProRes RAW SQ and ProRes RAW HQ. Both appear alongside the existing ProRes 422 formats. Previously, ProRes RAW recording on the E2-F6 Pro required a compatible external recorder. The firmware update removes that requirement, allowing filmmakers to record RAW footage directly to the camera’s internal recording media.

Exclusive to the E2-F6 Pro

The update is limited to the E2-F6 Pro. Responding to a question about compatibility with the E2-M4, Kinson confirmed that internal ProRes RAW is available only on the E2-F6 Pro. This means owners of other Z CAM models, including the E2-F6 and E2-S6 ($5,837.12 on Amazon), should not expect the same functionality from this announcement. The E2-F6 Pro uses an FPGA-based architecture, which may explain why the additional recording format can be introduced through firmware. However, Z CAM has not officially detailed the technical reasons behind the model restriction.

A significant recording upgrade

The addition of internal ProRes RAW gives E2-F6 Pro owners another high-quality recording option without investing in new camera hardware or external recording equipment. The announcement has not yet clarified the supported aspect ratios, recording media requirements, or whether the maximum 6K 60fps mode involves a sensor crop. These details will be important for filmmakers evaluating the new functionality. For existing E2-F6 Pro users, the update represents a substantial expansion of the camera’s recording capabilities through firmware alone.
