In an interview held by the Russian website PhotoWebExpo, Canon revealed its plans for the forthcoming EOS R3. Canon’s representative confirmed that the R3 will not be a flagship camera, but a mirrorless solution for the legendary EOS-1D X Mark III. Furthermore, the EOS R3 can be defined as a hybridization between the 1D X Mark III and the R5.

Canon EOS R3: Not a flagship

Three weeks ago, Canon has announced the development of the EOS R3 camera. Many websites (including us) have defined the R3 as the new flagship. Indeed, the R3 contains new technologies and implementations. The EOS R3 is the first EOS series camera to be equipped with Canon’s newly developed 35mm full-frame, back-illuminated, stacked CMOS sensor that makes possible high-speed readout (via a DIGIC X image processor) and reduced rolling shutter artifacts. Read more about Canon’s announcement in our coverage. However, it seems that the EOS R3 is being developed as an intermediate solution located between the 1D X Mark III and the EOS R5.

Canon states on its website that: “To build on their success and leverage advancements in technology that have come along since Canon Inc. announces the future development of a new class of EOS R camera. Landing between the robust EOS R5 and Canon’s flagship EOS-1D X Mark III, the Canon EOS R3 will be designed to satisfy the most demanding expectations in a professional camera — emphasizing speed, performance, and reliability”. Nevertheless, an interview held by the Russian website PhotoWebExpo (revealed thanks to CanonRumors) shed more light on this camera. Andrey Tishchenko, Head of Product at Canon Russia elaborates and says that the forthcoming EOS R3 will not be Canon’s new flagship, and its goal to allow photographers the speed and convenience of the DSLR 1D X Mark III, combined with the mirrorless capabilities of the EOS R5. Tishchenko adds that “Canon EOS R5 and R6 and any other cameras do not fully meet the same level of reliability in use as the 1D X”, and thus, the EOS R3 is being developed.

Initial thoughts: No global shutter

To be concluded, the EOS R3 will not be defined as a flagship camera. By the way, we’ve reported here previously about the rumored R1 (=counter-strike to the Sony Alpha 1) with an ultra high resolution (85MP) and a global shutter sensor. In continues to that, Canon says that a global shutter has its own limitations, not to mention the fact that it is difficult to manufacture. Tishchenko said that Canon already has a global shutter solution in the Super 35-based Cinema EOS C700 GS camera. However, reading between the lines, there’s no mention regarding a new global shutter camera in the near future. And what about drones? Tishchenko emphasizes that: “We cannot talk about drones yet, but it can be noted for sure that the more patents are made, the more chances that they will subsequently be implemented or appear in the form of some new product”.
