The sixth transformers movie in the series was shot on Alexa Mini and Alexa SXT, contrary to the others (mainly transformers 4 and 5) that were shot on RED! Watch the trailer – It looks magnificent!
One of the most cool facts in regard to cinematography is that, the last transformers movie (the fifth one) was shot by Michael Bay (the director of transformers movies) using a custom and specially made 8K RED. If I’m not mistaken, it was the FIRST 8K RED. Take a look at that beast below!
Since then Michael Bay has shot some more movies using RED cameras.
ARRIFLEX 235
It is interesting to note that Bay shot the first, second and third transformers movie using his very own film camera ARRIFLEX 235. Take a look at the picture below which demonstrates Michael Bay use his own ARRIFLEX 235 in Transformers 1 set.
No more RED in Transformers?
It seems that the RED tradition has been broken on Bumblebee which is the upcoming transformers movie, since the dominant camera according to IMDB spec is the Alexa Mini.

Also it’s important to note that Bumblebee is directed by Travis Knight while produced by Bay together together with Steven Spielberg.
Bumblebee, which will be released this year, takes place in 1987, about 20 years before the events of the first Transformers movie.
Synopsis: On the run in the year 1987, Bumblebee finds refuge in a junkyard in a small Californian beach town. Charlie (Hailee Steinfeld), on the cusp of turning 18 and trying to find her place in the world, discovers Bumblebee, battle-scarred and broken. When Charlie revives him, she quickly learns this is no ordinary, yellow VW bug.
There is no info regarding the budget yet, but obviously it’s going to be multi million dollar project.
ALEXA Mini in Hollywood
Previous I wrote an article on cinema5D analyzing the cameras used on the Oscar nominated films, and the dominant camera was the ALEXA Mini. So there you go. Another Mini in the basket, Not that I think that Bumblebee is going to be an Oscar nominated, the visuals are pretty impressive though.
