Canon USA uploaded a new video on its YouTube Channel trying to demonstrate the advantages of Canon’s cinema lenses. So why it looks like this video encourages shooters to choose RED cameras?

On Canon’s new video, freelance cinematographer Aaron Mendez uses Canon Cinema Lenses to give his shots a unique point of view and beautiful imagery. In his testimonial, Aaron gets up close and personal with his subjects and uses Canon glass to give a cinematic feel to the broadcast. So far so good. The thing is that Aaron is shooting with RED cameras. Don’t get me wrong. It’s OK to shoot with RED and use Canon glass. However, it’s Canon USA YouTube channel, and this video has a sole marketing purpose of encouraging shooters to use the entire Canon’s ecosystem. Instead, it seems that this video is indeed a marketing video but for RED Digital Cinema.

The equipment that we choose matters, we have to be ready for any situation, and our gear has to be reliable all day… The camera that we choose is the C300…… We usually end up shooting 8K RED Epic

From C300 to RED Epic

At the beginning of the video, Aaron demonstrates how he captures action sport with Canon C300 to give the shots the cinematic touch with a reliable, robust and never-fail camera. As stated by Aaron:” The equipment that we choose matters, we have to be ready for any situation, and our gear has to be reliable all day… The camera that we choose is the C300…… We usually end up shooting 8K RED Epic”

To be an action sports shooter, you need the best equipment for the job since action sport is a fast pace shooting environment. In most of the time, you have only one shot. Imagine that you shoot the official video of a national Marathon contest. You have one shot at getting the first second of the start of the race. Failing to catch that can result in losing your job.

Canon cinema cameras are perfect for action sport situations since they are fast, reliable and with proper power management so you can turn on the camera and start shooting all day long.

When I saw the Canon USA video, I was happy at the beginning, since I am also using Canon on action sports productions. I was expecting for demonstration of Canon Cinema capabilities in this kind of shooting, but it turns out that the shooter in the video has switched to RED cameras as his weapon of choice.

Final thoughts – Subliminal advertisement for RED

The goal of this video was to emphasize the quality and effectiveness of Canon Cinema lenses, but why doing so on RED camera?

In the end, it looks like Canon USA made a subliminal advertisement for RED cameras. Do you think the same? Let’s know.
