ASC Master Class

The ASC Master Class is an intensive five-day seminar taught in Los Angeles by some of the finest directors of photography in the world. Designed for cinematography students with an intermediate-to-advanced skill set, the ASC Master Class incorporates practical, hands-on demonstrations of lighting and camera techniques with essential instruction in current workflow practices and informed analysis of feature films that are relevant to the coursework. However, this time, the Master Class will be held online via Zoom.

The Online ASC Master Class: January 22-24, 2021

The American Society of Cinematographers Online Master Class series is a three-day online seminar with live interactions and Q&A with some of the world’s top working cinematographers. According to ASC Magazine, this online Master Class is live sessions with the interaction between students and ASC members and derived and adapted from the in-person Master Classes. The next online class will be held between Friday, January 22, and Sunday, January 24, 2021. The class size will be limited to 30 participants. The confirmed ASC instructors are Fred Elmes, Bob Yeoman, and Tobias Schliessler.

The planned curriculum

The syllabus includes a pre-recorded lighting demonstration, selected film clips, live instruction, and interactive discussion periods, and is designed to last about 5.5 hours per day, with each session starting at 8:00 AM Pacific Standard Time.

The program will include:

  1. Welcome address by ASC member describing this new online Master Class format.
  2. Presentations by ASC instructors followed by Q&A sessions, allowing students to address specific areas of interest or gain further detail.
  3. Pre-Recorded lighting demonstration: set up, shooting, editing, and color grading. This session will be live-narrated by the on-set DP who will lead a Q&A with students afterward
  4. Deep-dive discussions on influential films of artistic significance, curated by ASC instructors. (To be viewed by students prior to the session.)
  5. Panel discussions with ASC members on select topics.
  6. Presentations and Q&A with leading equipment manufacturers

Price and registration

Registration is now open for students worldwide. All instruction will be in English and conducted via Zoom. Final thoughts

According to ASC Magazine, the in-person ASC Master Classes will resume when health conditions permit. Also, attendees at the online Master Class will also be given a 10% discount on a future in-person Master Class. In my personal opinion, paying $900 for a Zoom session might be a bit too steep. All the beauty with ASC Master Classes is the privileged opportunity of the face-to-face discussion with ASC members. I truly hope that these are the last online sessions so we can initiate the in-person ASC Master Classes when the COVID saga ends this year.

  1. I took the first online masterclass and it was awesome! I would highly recommend to anyone that wants to step up their cinematography game and be able to speak with the ASC members one on one. The asc members were so gracious with their time and insight! And the price really is a great value for a 3 day webinar compared to flying out to LA, Hotel, food, etc. I can’t wait to take another online class next year!
