A new Canon patent application was spotted by ‘The New Camera’ website. According to the website, the application shows the successor of the Canon ME200S-SH Multi-Purpose Camera. However, according to the drawing, it looks almost identical to the RED Komodo.

Is this Canon’s new boxy cinema camera?

The website New Camera has published “Canon’s latest patent application”, claiming that this is the successor of the ME200S-SH Multi-Purpose Camera, which will have an RF Mount. The article, titled “Canon ME200S-SH Successor will Have RF Mount, Display Unit and More” describes this application as stated (by New Camera): “In the latest patent, we have spotted Canon is working on Canon ME200S-SH style modular cinema camera which also features a display unit with redesigned controls. At the same time, we are also expecting the introduction of Canon RF Mount in the ME series of cameras”. The article adds: “Not only the display unit you also have the option to use the camera with Battery but earlier the M200S-SH was also limited to a direct inline power source only, with no option to use a battery”.

Almost Identical to the RED Komodo

The patent’s drawings show a camera design that looks the same as the RED Digital Cinema Komodo 6K camera. Actually, if you haven’t told me that this is Canon’s patent, I’d be sure that this is RED’s patent of the Komodo. The buttons, design, profile, structure, slots, battery locations, screen, and more, just look the same.

Is it a real application?

We’ve tried to search after the application but no dice. So take this info with a grain of salt. We also tried to contact the website for reference. Till now there’s no answer. The drawings look legit though. What do you think? Is it a real application? The resemblance between those two cameras is striking. Anyway, we’ll update you on that matter.

  1. Maybe Canon has a license from RED to use their Komodo sensor and rebrand in a Canon body. Or, Canon made the Komodo sensor and the exclusivity for RED is ending? Or none of the above.

  2. I think I saw it on the “reduser(official)” Facebook page. Or I might have seen this comment made by him elsewhere, as he comments to his public quite frequently.
