Another “Primate monkey”

Last year, DZOFILM broke into the market with its Catta FF Zoom Lenses which were defined (by DZOFILM) as primate monkeys regarding their optimal ratio (capabilities -price). Now, DZOFILM brings new Catta Ace FF Zoom Cine Lenses (PL+EF mount) to full-frame shooters. Same as Catta FF Zoom, the Catta Ace are available in the desired focal lengths of 35-80mm and 70-135mm at T/2.9.

Catta Ace FF Zoom Cine: Characteristics

DZOFILM states that the Ace lenses are characterized by a warm and cinematic look, invisible breathing, and zero distortion. The lenses are dedicated to large sensors and can cover a 46.5mm image circle. Moreover, a 16 bladed iris ensures rounded bokeh for exquisite texture and gentle sharpness.  Different from white Catta FF Zoom, DZOFILM has chosen to use black aluminum alloy on the shell of Catta Ace in order to “Improve a comfortable sense of holding”. Furthermore, the Ace lenses are more compact and lightweight. The 35mm-80mm weighs only 1.64kg, while the 70mm-135mm 1.71kg (There’s not much of a difference compared to the Catta though).

Mounts

The Catta FF Zoom lenses have E/RF/L/X/Z mounts. In terms of Catta Ace, lenses are originated in PL mount. Each lens will be packed with an additional EF mount bayonet. LPL mount version will be optional as well. Besides, lenses can be adapted to other mounts with DZOFILM Octopus adapters. Explore the specs in the slide below:

Affordability is the key

DZOFILM states that it develops affordable cine lenses for filmmakers without the expense of sharpness. Indeed, the price of a single Catta Ace Zoom cine lens (35-80mm/70-135mm) with a Pelican package is $3899, while a set of lenses (35-80mm & 70-135mm) with a Pelican package is $7499. The additional LPL mount is $219. DZOFILM will start to ship the Catta Ace in early March. BTW, the price of the white Catta is $3,100 which makes it a lot cheaper. Wrapping up

Yet another great and affordable glass from DZOFILM. Just like their older brothers, the Catta Ace FF Cine lenses seem like a solid choice for filmmakers who are eager for decent cinema zoom lenses for their large sensors, and without breaking the bank. However, there’s not much of a difference between the new Catta and the old Catta, which are much more affordable compared to the Ace, although with the Ace you get a bit more. As for the image quality, check out the only sample footage (which is not the most flattering – in our opinion) that we found (released by DZOFILM), shot on RED paired with the new Ace:
