Underwater housing for cinema cameras

Gates is a well-known company that specializes in innovating and manufacturing underwater housing for high-end cinema camera like the Canon Cinema line, RED, ARRI, and even the Phantom Flex 4K. Gates productsย areย the industry standardย for underwater filming, marine productions and thus are most reliable and professional.

The price range of the housing is between $10,000 to $20,000. The housingsย are robust and pedantry created in order to preserve and protect the very pricy camera inside. Take for example the companyโ€™s last announcement regarding the ALEXA LF underwater housing that costs about $20,000.

Gates underwater housing for the HYDROGEN ONE

Yesterday, Jim Jannard, RED Digital Cinema founder, has posted the new Gates underwater housing for HYDROGEN on his Instagram and FB pages. This HYDROGENโ€™s accessory seems pretty cool, yet we were surprised, as Gates focuses on high-end cinema cameras and not on phones, which means that this is probably the most robust underwater housing created for a smartphone yet.

Of course, when thinking about it, RED defines the Hydrogen as a Media Machine rather than a regular smartphone, which makes some sense why it needs this extra robustness for underwater tasks. However, it looks cool, as stated by Jim: โ€œMisha’s got a new toy… a Gates underwater housing for her HYDROGEN. She lives in the water so this is something she was so looking forward to. She has already shot some incredible 4V stills and video which will be posted soon.โ€

Price and availability

Unfortunately, there is no info regarding pricing nor availability. One thing for sure: Itโ€™s not going to be cheap.

Update (Feb-23): The Gates Underwater Housing is waterproof to 140 feet (42 meters), and its price: $1000.ย

What are your thoughts about HYDROGENโ€™s underwater housing? Make a bet on the price.

    • I agree, and i love it . The perfect addition for a Titanium Hydrogen 1 . I want this housing.

    • Don’t think so. Seems that there is no add-on underwater housing to attach to the Gates Hydrogen Housing. however, Gates has dedicated housing for RED cameras with lens options.
