SIGMA Announces Major Firmware Update for the fp L Full-Frame Camera

SIGMA has released a major firmware update (Ver 2.00) for its fp L full-frame compact mirrorless camera. The update includes some feature improvements for still and video (CINE) modes. Check out the release notes below:

Now it’s the turn of fp L

After the major firmware update (Ver 3.00) of its fp compact full-frame camera, now it’s the turn of the more advanced camera, the fp L. Sigma has just been announced on Firmware Ver 2.00 which includes significant updates and features for the fp L full-frame mirrorless camera. SIGMA fp L: Ver 2.00

The fp L constitutes a high-resolution update to the original fp. The Sigma fp L is a compact and modular mirrorless camera featuring a new 61MP full-frame sensor, improved autofocus performance, and a versatile feature-set catering to both photography and cinematography applications. Key features of the fp L include:

  • 61MP Full-Frame BSI Bayer CMOS Sensor (based on Foveon technology)
  • UHD 4K30p Video with 12-Bit CinemaDNG
  • Hybrid Phase- and Contrast-Detection AF
  • 3.15″ 2.1m-Dot Touchscreen LCD

Firmware Ver 2.00

SIGMA states that the Firmware Ver 2.00 is a major update for the SIGMA fp L. Explore the release notes below (as described by SIGMA): 

  1. It adds the “False Color” function where the exposure status on the screen is displayed in different colors, allowing users to easily see the exposure status of any part of the frame.
  2. It adds the “Focus Ring Control” function that allows users to change the movement of the focus ring to either linear or non-linear.
  3. It adds the “STILL / CINE Link Settings” function that allows users to select whether or not they want to link key exposure settings between STILL and CINE modes.
  4. It allows the “Screenshot” and “False color” functions to be assigned to “Custom button functions”.
  5. It changes the specification so that the countdown before a shot in self-timer mode (2 seconds and 10 seconds), and the exposure time for long exposures (bulb shooting and exposures of 1 second or longer) are displayed on the screen.
  6. It adds a function available in STILL mode where information from the attached lens (focal length and shooting distance) can be displayed on the screen.
  7. It adds a “Clip Numbering” function in CINE mode that allows users to change the clip numbering of the “Filename / Number” in the “SYSTEM” menu.
  8. It improves the correction algorithm for Color Shading Correction.
  9. It improves the operation of “Pre-AF” in STILL mode and “Constant AF” in CINE mode.

  1. Hi, I noticed that in the blurb at the top it stated that the sensor is “based on Foveon technology”
    Are you able to explain how that translates into the Bayer sensor?
