The Blackmagic PYXIS 12K has officially joined Netflix’s approved camera list for Netflix Originals. This development follows YMCinema’s earlier discussion titled Blackmagic PYXIS 12K: Why Isn’t It Netflix Approved Yet?, where we explored whether the camera’s modular design and workflow philosophy could delay certification despite sharing imaging DNA with other Netflix-approved Blackmagic systems. But it doesn’t matter now, since it has been approved.

Netflix confirms support for multiple acquisition formats

The newly released production documentation confirms approved acquisition formats, including 12K, 9K, 8K, and 4K recording using Blackmagic RAW. The camera supports several aspect ratios, including Open Gate 3:2, 16:9, 17:9, 2.4:1, and 6:5. Netflix’s documentation also notes that the 12K, 8K, and 4K formats use the full sensor width or height without cropping. Anamorphic de-squeeze options up to 2x are supported across all formats. According to the documentation, the PYXIS 12K can record up to 60fps in 12K 2.4:1, 90fps in 8K 17:9, and 112fps in 8K 2.4:1. The guide also includes Super 35 9K modes reaching up to 80fps.

Blackmagic RAW remains central

Netflix’s workflow recommendations are built around Blackmagic RAW acquisition. The approved compression options include Constant Bitrate 3:1, 8:1, 12:1, and 18:1, alongside Constant Quality Q0, Q1, Q3, and Q5. The documentation also highlights compatibility with a wide range of post-production applications, including DaVinci Resolve, Premiere Pro, Avid Media Composer, Baselight, Nuke, Flame, Scratch, and Gyroflow. Another notable point is support for decoding Blackmagic RAW directly into ARRI LogC3 and LogC4 color spaces. This could simplify mixed camera workflows for productions using multiple camera systems. The PYXIS 12K can simultaneously generate 1080p H.264 proxy files while recording RAW originals. Those proxies can integrate with Blackmagic Cloud workflows using WiFi, ethernet, or cellular connectivity. The documentation places clear emphasis on collaborative and remote editorial pipelines.

A cool addition to Netflix’s approved ecosystem

Netflix approval places the PYXIS 12K into a category traditionally occupied by larger and more expensive cinema systems. The combination of Open Gate capture, 12K RAW recording, high frame rates, anamorphic support, and integrated cloud workflows gives the camera a broad production feature set that now carries official Netflix certification as well.
