GoPro MISSION 1 PRO ILS Hits Amazon With 7Artisans T1.05 MFT Cinema Lens Bundle

The GoPro MISSION 1 PRO ILS ($599 on Amazon) has now appeared on Amazon at $699.99, marking the camera’s arrival at a major retail channel following its August launch. More interestingly, Amazon is already presenting it as part of a complete cinema-oriented package, pairing the compact body with a 7Artisans 25mm, 35mm ($349 on Amazon) and 50mm ($301 on Amazon) T1.05 cine lens set for Micro Four Thirds mount. According to the Amazon listing shown at the time of writing, the three-lens set is priced at $979.30, bringing the suggested camera-and-lens combination to $1,679.29. That pairing is useful because it illustrates what GoPro’s interchangeable-lens version of the MISSION 1 is actually designed to do: work less like a conventional action camera and more like a very small cinema body built around manual glass.

A $699 interchangeable-lens cinema body

GoPro officially introduced the MISSION 1 PRO ILS on August 26, with retail availability planned for September and an MSRP of $699.99. The camera uses the same 50MP 1-inch sensor and GP3 processor as the fixed-lens MISSION 1 PRO, but replaces the integrated optics with a native Micro Four Thirds mount. The core recording specifications are substantial for such a compact camera. It can capture 8K up to 60 fps, 8K Open Gate up to 30 fps, 4K up to 240 fps and 4K Open Gate up to 120 fps. It also supports 10-bit recording, GP-Log2, HLG HDR and bit rates up to 240Mbps. The body weighs 197 grams. For cinema users, however, the ILS version is arguably defined more by its mount than by those headline resolution numbers.

Why the 7Artisans lenses make sense

Amazon’s suggested bundle includes 25mm, 35mm and 50mm T1.05 cinema lenses in Micro Four Thirds mount. These are manual cinema lenses rather than electronic stills lenses, which is particularly appropriate for the MISSION 1 PRO ILS. GoPro confirms that the camera does not have electronic contacts in its lens mount. Compatible lenses therefore need manual focus and either manual or fixed aperture control. Autofocus and electronically controlled aperture are not supported. That makes fully mechanical cinema primes a logical choice. A T1.05 aperture is also significant. T-stops describe actual light transmission rather than simply the geometrical aperture used by conventional F-stop markings. For cinematographers, matching T-stops across a lens set makes exposure management more predictable when changing focal lengths. The 25mm, 35mm and 50mm combination therefore forms a conventional three-prime cinema set in terms of physical lens design and operating style, even though the resulting field of view on the GoPro is quite different from what those focal lengths would produce on Super 35 or full-frame cameras.

MFT mount does not mean MFT sensor

The MISSION 1 PRO ILS has a Micro Four Thirds mount, but it does not contain a Micro Four Thirds sensor. The imaging sensor is 1 inch. GoPro specifies an approximate 2.7x crop factor relative to full frame without stabilization, increasing to roughly 3x when HyperSmooth stabilization is applied. The company therefore recommends multiplying the marked focal length by approximately 2.7 to 3 to understand the full-frame-equivalent field of view. Using GoPro’s figures, the 7Artisans set would behave approximately like this:

Lens Approx. full-frame equivalent without stabilization Approx. equivalent with stabilization
25mm 67.5mm 75mm
35mm 94.5mm 105mm
50mm 135mm 150mm

This immediately shows one limitation of the suggested Amazon bundle: it is not a particularly wide lens set on this camera. The 25mm becomes a short telephoto-style field of view rather than a conventional wide or normal cinema lens. The 35mm and especially the 50mm move much further into telephoto territory. For portraits, details, controlled compositions and compressed perspectives, that may be perfectly useful. For handheld environmental work, interiors, vehicle mounting or traditional GoPro-style wide-angle shooting, users would probably want to add a substantially wider MFT lens. GoPro itself gives 6mm as approximately 18mm full-frame equivalent when the 3x stabilized crop is applied.

Manual cinema operation in a very small body

There is another reason the pairing is interesting. The MISSION 1 PRO ILS includes focus peaking and focus assist, including magnification up to 8x, precisely because focusing is expected to be performed manually. GoPro also allows the user to enter the focal length of the attached lens so that HyperSmooth can adapt stabilization to the optics being used. That creates an unusual operating concept. The camera itself weighs less than 200 grams, yet it can be attached to geared manual cinema lenses, rigged into confined locations and operated with tools more normally associated with dedicated cinema cameras. GoPro also says that adapters can be used for vintage lenses, PL-mount cinema lenses and other specialty optics, considerably expanding the system beyond native MFT glass. To sum it up, at $699.99 for the body, the MISSION 1 PRO ILS provides an unusually low-cost entry point into that type of interchangeable-lens cinema workflow. The $1,679.29 Amazon combination with three T1.05 cinema primes shows what that system can look like once actual cinema glass is placed in front of the 1-inch sensor.
