The biggest name in the Top 10 is Canon. Six of the ten lenses are RF or RF-S models. But there is another pattern that may be even more important for buyers: most of these lenses are relatively affordable. There is no Canon L-series lens in the Top 10. Instead, the ranking is dominated by compact primes, practical zooms and accessible telephotos. At the time of checking, the #1 Canon RF50mm F1.8 STM ($199 on Amazon) was $199, while Viltrox reached seventh place with a $99 autofocus pancake lens. Here is what each lens offers, and who should consider it.

1. Canon RF50mm F1.8 STM — $199

The RF50mm F1.8 is exactly the kind of lens that makes sense as an Amazon bestseller. It is small, light and relatively inexpensive, while F1.8 gives photographers significantly more low-light capability and background separation than a typical kit zoom. For full-frame EOS R cameras, 50mm is a classic general-purpose focal length. It works well for portraits, people, street photography and everyday shooting. The RF100-400mm is the most expensive lens in the Top 10, yet Amazon still shows 500+ purchases during the past month. That says something about telephoto lenses: photographers will spend more when the lens gives them access to something their existing equipment simply cannot do. A 100-400mm range opens the door to wildlife, aviation, sports and distant subjects. It also includes optical image stabilization and Canon’s Nano USM autofocus system. It is slower than Canon’s professional telephotos, particularly at the long end, but it is also much smaller and less expensive. Best for: Wildlife, sports, aircraft and outdoor photography. The TTArtisan is the strangest lens in the Top 10, and that is precisely why it is interesting. It is a manual-focus APS-C 35mm F1.4 lens with a tilt mechanism. Tilting the optical axis changes the plane of focus, allowing photographers and filmmakers to create selective-focus effects that cannot easily be produced with a normal lens. What buyers can learn from the ranking

Canon clearly dominates this particular Amazon snapshot, taking six of the ten positions. But none of those six lenses belongs to Canon’s premium L series. That may be the more useful observation. Amazon buyers appear to be concentrating on lenses that solve a clear problem at a reasonable price. A $199 50mm gives photographers F1.8. A $299 16mm provides ultra-wide coverage. A $219 75-300mm adds telephoto reach. A $99 Viltrox pancake makes a Fujifilm camera dramatically smaller. There are exceptions. The $599 Tamron 17-70mm and $749 Canon RF100-400mm are substantially more expensive, but both show more than 500 recent purchases. In both cases, the buyer gets something difficult to reproduce with a cheaper lens: a constant-F2.8 general-purpose zoom or a 400mm telephoto. Discounting is also part of the current picture. Several lenses in the Top 10 are being sold below their displayed list or typical prices, including the Canon RF50mm, Tamron 17-70mm, Canon RF16mm, Canon RF35mm, RF-S10-18mm and RF75-300mm. That does not prove discounts created the ranking, but it is relevant context. The practical lesson is simple: the most popular lens is not necessarily the most advanced lens. For many photographers, a lens becomes attractive when it adds one useful capability at a price that makes sense. And right now on Amazon, that seems to be exactly what buyers are choosing.
