There is no doubt that the Macbook Pro is the dominant laptop in the field when dealing with post production processes. But what about MacBook Air? It seems that the Macbook Air was left behind for those kind of applications. I know a few filmmakers that would love to edit FCPX on a Macbook Air, because it’s more compact, cheaper and travel friendly.

Now it might be possible thanks to Intel’s new 8th Generation Intel Core processor: The U-series (formerly code-named Whiskey Lake) and Y-series (formerly code-named Amber Lake).

According to Intel press release: “ New 8th Gen Intel Core U-series and Y-series processors raise the bar for connectivity, performance, entertainment and productivity for today’s laptops… delivering up to 12-times faster connectivity speeds…create, edit and share 4K/360 video content 6.5-times faster”

Intel says that the 8th Gen Intel Core Y-series processors also deliver fast connectivity options, including fast Wi-Fi and LTE capabilities with unprecedented performance, to the some of the thinnest and lightest laptops in the market with double-digit gains in performance compared with the previous generation in sleek and compact form factor with extended battery life.

New Macbook-Air lineup

Although it’s not written nor clarified that those new processors will be implemented inside Macbook Air lineup, there is a good chance that there will be a new lineup of Macbook Air with the Y and U series implemented, allowing filmmakers and editors to work with heavy softwares like FCPX and DaVinci Resolve on editing and grading tasks, by using Macbook Air instead of Macbook Pro, due to the smarter 8th generation core processors data management and performance.

Do you use Macbook Air on demanding editing and grading post production tasks? Let us know what you think about those new processors.
