This new Kia commercial presets a truly impressive implementation of the Blackmagic cameras ecosystem. Shot by Freystil, which is a Salzburg-based content production agency, on the Blackmagic Pocket 6K and URSA 12K, this project demonstrates some really cool setup which involved an FPV drone,  Venus Laowa Macro Probe, and more. Check it out.

Kia Motors commercial shot on Blackmagic cameras systems

Blackmagic Design announced that Freystil, a Salzburg-based content production agency, has shot the latest advertising campaign for Kia Motors Austria using the URSA Mini Pro 12K. The campaign was shot over ten days, with a further seven days for post-production. The production agency opted for the URSA Mini Pro 12K as its principal camera package and combined it with the Xeen XC Carbon 8K full-frame lenses.

The campaign was mastered in 4K, and a further nine different full HD formats were delivered to match the national Austrian broadcast stations’ requirements. “We shot the bulk of this production in 8K, the rest in the highest resolution possible, and we loved it. The higher resolution was ideal for reframing and cropping in post”, says Freystil.

Freystil demonstrates some pretty cool setup. For instance, check out the BMPCC (Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera) 6K attached to an FPV drone, which delivered those fast aerial shots of the vehicle:

URSA 12K paired with Venus Laowa Probe

One of the most interesting and educating setups was paring the URSA 12K with the Venus Laowa 24mm f/14 Probe 2X Macro Lens which executed a neat Bug Eyeshot of the wheel and the dashboard. Explore the BTS footage below:

According to the production, aside from COVID restrictions, mother nature was the biggest challenge: “We shot with it for a minimum of two hours in a row at minus 12 degrees centigrade, on top of a mountain, one hour in the rain at night, a whole day outside in the snow with minus four degrees centigrade, and it worked just fine”. Also, the URSA 12K allowed the team to shoot slow-motion (110 FPS) 8K footage, crop the 12K, and oversampling 4K images for the sake of the Xeen XC lenses.

Final thoughts

This car commercial can be used as a case study regarding the utilization of the Blackmagic camera systems. Unfortunately, the commercial (like many others) is very short, so we don’t have enough time to enjoy (and examine) the quality of the footage, although from what i’ve seen it’s truly impressive, polished, and professional.

Watch it below, and feel free to comment your insights about it:
