What a wonderful surprise! Apple has just introduced the DaVinci Resolve for the iPad, as a part of the announcement of the M2 iPad Pro. The app will be ready later this year. Screen grabs are below.

Apple  M2 iPad Pro

Apple has just introduced its next-generation iPad Pro, supercharged by the M2 chip. The new iPad Pro features a next-level Apple Pencil hover experience, ProRes video capture, super-fast Wi-Fi 6E, and powerful features in iPadOS 16. As stated by Apple: “The M2 chip is the next generation of Apple silicon, with an 8‑core CPU that delivers up to 15 percent faster performance and a 10‑core GPU that provides up to 35 percent faster graphics performance. With a 40 percent faster Neural Engine to accelerate machine learning tasks and 50 percent more memory bandwidth, M2 brings astonishing performance and new capabilities to the iPad Pro. So you can create photorealistic 3D designs, build intricate AR models, and play games with console‑quality graphics at high frame rates faster than ever. All while enjoying all‑day battery life.

The breakthrough performance of M2 enhances an incredible selection of pro apps available on iPad, including DaVinci Resolve.

DaVinci Resolve for iPad Pro

This might be the most important feature for the filmmaking community: A dedicated iPad Pro app, for the mighty DaVinci Resolve. As stated by Apple: “The breakthrough performance of M2 enhances an incredible selection of pro apps available on iPad, including DaVinci Resolve, Adobe Photoshop, Affinity Publisher 2 iPad, Octane X, uMake, and more”. Moreover, Apple claims that the high-performance media engine on M2 accelerates ProRes encode and decode. You can convert video projects to ProRes up to 3x faster than before. And with the image signal processor in M2 and advanced cameras on iPad Pro, you can now capture ProRes video. Five studio‑quality microphones and four-speaker audio with support for Dolby Atmos let you record and deliver theater‑quality sound”.

When and how much?

DaVinci Resolve for iPad pro app will be available later this year. No info about price. The question is compatibility. Will the application be compatible with M1 iPad Pro? That’s a good question. Let’s hope it does! We’ll keep you posted with more details.
