RED Partners With ARRI: Launching Custom RAPTOR XL to be Paired With DNA Lenses

There seems to be a love story between RED and ARRI, as they have partnered together to develop a custom Raptor XL, especially for ARRI Rental’s acclaimed DNA lenses. This collaboration was made for the upcoming TRON movie. The question remains: Will the RED Raptor XL be paired with the DNA LF lenses or with the DNA Primes dedicated to the ALEXA 65?

“RED❤️ARRI”

As stated by RED Digital Cinema CEO, Jarred Land just two hours ago: “RED❤️ARRI. Excited and truly humbled to share our newest collaboration between RED and ARRI Rentals for TRON and the mighty mighty Jeff Croneweth, together we made a small army of custom RAPTOR XLs made specifically for ARRI’s Incredible DNA glass. Betcha you never saw this one coming 😉”

Will the Raptor XL replace the ARRI 65?

Originally developed for the 65 mm format of ARRI Rental’s exclusive ALEXA 65 camera platform, DNA is a unique concept in lens creation. In essence, it is technology born of relationships: vintage optics rehoused and customized in partnership with filmmakers, to reflect their artistic sensibilities. As emphasized by ARRI Rental regarding the DNA LF glass: “While Prime DNA lenses for the larger ALEXA 65 format can be used on the ALEXA LF, doing so eliminates some of the interesting, imperfect elements at the edges and corners of the image, which filmmakers so revere. It, therefore, makes sense to offer DNA LF lenses purpose-made for the ALEXA LF, featuring a 49 mm image circle that is perfectly matched to the LF sensor” said ARRI Rental when launching the LF version of these lenses back in 2019. Land hasn’t mentioned which DNA will be paired with the custom Raptor XL. As the DNA LF doesn’t need any special customization, and therefore, maybe this TRON Raptor XL will go with the DNA Primes, instead of the ARRI 65? Let’s wait for some BTS.

  1. Sound like a similar combo Jeff Cronenweth (the DP) used for “Being The Ricardos”, which was the Red Monstro and Arri DNA lenses. Although I’m uncertain which type he used. “Moonfall” also paired the Red Monstro with DNA Lenses – the “LF” range.
