Irix Cine T1.5 set

The 21mm will be Irix’s widest lens, which matches the 30 and 45mm with T1.5, in order to allow consistent shooting on a wide-open aperture. According to Irix, all Cine lenses are designed with unified standards. Similar weights, 86mm front filter thread on most lenses, and same location of focus and iris gears. The signature Magnetic Mount System allows for easy mounting of the Irix Edge MMS filters on the 15mm, 30mm, 45mm, and 150mm lenses.

21mm T1.5 Full-Frame Cine

As stated by Irix: “Whether cruising with your gimbal between dancing people during a wedding or shooting an action scene, where we want to get really close, the image will look like many more narrow lenses. Getting this close was for example in the movie Revenant. There DOP Emmanuel Lubezki was able to get really dynamic shots and make the viewer feel like they are right there with the actors thanks to lenses of similar focal lengths as 21mm”. Basically, Irix says that the 21mm combined with a large sensor can achieve the ultra-wide look which reminds us of Hollywood films. However, judge for yourself. Here’s some test footage of that lens:

Weather Sealed structure

The 21mm T1.5 Cine is like all other lenses in series – resistant to rain, sand, snow, or dust. Furthermore, the engraved markings on the lens that have been filled with UV-reactive paint grant better visuals when shooting in difficult lighting conditions.

Innovative adaptive ring

The lens has an adaptive ring that has been designed to keep the lens housing sleek and user-friendly when operated manually, but without any compromises when you want to use your favorite cine gear.

New and improved lens cover

Irix emphasizes that it has been listened to requests from customers and decided to redesign the lens cover. “The previous one didn’t allow for leaving the lens standing on it. The improved one has a flat top and slides on the lens. Thanks to this, you can now leave the lens upside down on a table and not worry about it wobbling!” Irix says.

Final thoughts

The Irix Cine 21mm T1.5 seems like a solid and affordable option to be paired with full-frame cinema cameras, or any other cameras that the operator is desired to utilize a fully manual lens. The 21mm looks very wide when using it on large sensors. However, the distortion is bearable, and it can get quite nice and special when shooting portraits. Have a looked at the test footage? What do you think about the imagery of the Irix Cine 21mm?

  1. What is this an advertisement? What is the FOV? What is the FOV with different lens mounts? How many aperture blades does it have? Sorry this “news post” is low effort.
