In recognition of the achievements of the 435 system, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded ARRI a Scientific and Engineering Academy Award in 1999.

ARRIFLEX 435

That’s how ARRI explains that born of the ARRIFLEX 435: “The ARRIFLEX 435 came out in 1994 as a 35 mm MOS and high-speed camera to replace the 35 III. Its dual 3-pin pull-down claws and industry-standard dual registration pins assured optical printer steadiness. Frame rates up to 150 fps could be combined with in-camera speed ramps by means of a motorized mirror shutter, and the lens iris could be coupled to a control unit. TV commercials immediately embraced the technology of speed-iris-mirror shutter control, as agency creatives, directors, and DPs unleashed spates of beautiful sequences exploring time and motion”. The ARRIFLEX’s applications were (and still are) widespread, and thus it is regularly used on music videos, commercials, second unit work on features, special effects work, and motion control, among other usages. Furthermore, in recognition of the achievements of the 435 system, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded ARRI a Scientific and Engineering Academy Award in 1999. Here’re a few notable films shot on the ARRIFLEX system:

The Xtreme model

A new FEM (Functional Expansion Module) was added in 2003 to increase the camera’s electronic feature set. ARRI integrated this into the new 435 Xtreme, which was released in 2004. The new functions included faster ramping speed capability, a wider ramping range that could go down to 0.1 frames per second, further motion control interface abilities, integrated lens electronics, and integrated wireless radio signaling. Three more accessories were released in 2005, exclusively for the 435 Advanced and 435 Xtreme: a hand-crank extension, a timing shift box to offset the phasing, and a remote LCD control panel designed for use on the “dumb side” of the camera.
