IMAX has just released the Twisters (1996 Twister’s sequel) trailer, and it looks awesome. The Twisters movie was shot by legendary Dan Mindel ASC, BSC, SASC purely on film (ARRIFLEX 435, ARRIFLEX 535B, and Panaflex Millennium XL2), in order to maintain the look of the first movie, or just to make it to be screened tremendously on the huge canvas.

‘Twisters’ is an upcoming American disaster film directed by Lee Isaac Chung (the director of Minari which was nominated for Best Picture at Oscars 2021 (shot on ARRI ALEXA Mini paired with Panavision P Vintage glass)) and shot by DP Dan Mindel ASC, BSC, SASC.
It stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Maura Tierney, Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack, Sasha Lane, Kiernan Shipka, and Nik Dodani. Twisters is a standalone sequel to Twister (1996). Furthermore, according to reports, the story will be entirely new and updated to today’s methods and techniques of tornado hunting. Additionally, no character from the original Twister returns in this movie. The film can be defined as an update to the 1996 film ‘Twister’, which centered on a pair of storm chasers who risk their lives in an attempt to test an experimental weather alert system. Shot on film
Legendary cinematographer, Ivor Daniel Mindel, ASC, BSC, SASC has shot Twisters purely on film, by utilizing the mighty ARRIFLEX and Panaflex cameras. That would be an ideal imagery pairing. As explained, the main cameras are ARRIFLEX 435, ARRIFLEX 535B, and Panaflex Millennium XL2. Mindel is known for his passion for shooting on film. He’s best known for his work on blockbuster action films like Enemy of the State, Mission: Impossible 3, Star Trek, Star Trek Into Darkness, Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, and working with directors like Tony Scott and J. J. Abrams. As for Twisters, on an estimated budget of $200 million, principal photography commenced around Oklahoma City in May 2023. Filming was to take place at Prairie Surf Studios for 40 days and in metro Oklahoma City for 50 days. Other locations included Chickasha, Okarche, El Reno, Spencer, and Cashion. Moreover, filming was suspended in July due to the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike. Luckily, production resumed with the conclusion of the strike in November 2023, wrapping up the following month. Film is back to the game
It’s nice to see that film is live and kicking. ARRIFLEX bodies give a fight to digital, which is good. For instance, the ARRICAMs were the heroes of Oscars 2024 (explore the Film vs. Digital segmentation below), together with the XL2 and IMAX film.
As for the ARRIFLEX 435, it is one of the dominant film cameras used in Sundance 2023, Cannes 2023, and even Oscars 2023 as well. BTW, ARRI CPO has been selling a 435 body for a bit more than $21,000.
Anyway, Twisters is scheduled to be released worldwide by Universal Pictures and Warner Bros. Pictures on July 19, 2024. According to IMDB, the aspect ratio is 2.39: 1. If so, where’s the ‘IMAX connection’? We hope it will released on the expended aspect ratio as well since the IMAX screen can perfectly handle the precious celluloid output.

I’m looking forward to this one. It’ll probably be dumb fun (just like the first one), but that’s okay. The fact it’s shot on film is, on its own, reason enough for me to buy a ticket. As a result of originating on film, it will at least–hopefully (assuming they don’t scrub/ruin things in post)–actually look like a proper film, grain and all. I’m so tired of digital, and digital trying to look like film (e.g. fake grain). Just shoot on film, for crying out loud. Kudos to those who made the decision to do so for this movie–thank you.
It’s just an amazing fact that we want to see a movie so much in the theater because it was shot on film. Can’t wait for this one.
I’m looking forward to what’s next in the sequel: Twisted Sister. Joking aside, it’s cool that it’s caught on film, absolutely. But the original didn’t leave much of an impression on my memory.
