ARRI ALEXA 65: The Camera Behind The Lion King 2019

According to IMBD, the camera used to shot The Lion King 2019 is ARRI ALEXA 65.  That information (should it be accurate) can imply us that this remake is live-action and not 100% animated as seen on trailer.

Live-action: Yes or No?

There are a lot of controversies and stormy discussions out there regarding the film that we all going to watch: The Lion King 2019 format, whether is live-action or animation.

Check out this article from Cartoon Brew which claims that The Lion King remake is an animated film. As stated: “ The Walt Disney Company continues to try and mislead audiences by suggesting that the film is live action. In the Youtube video description, they state, “From Disney Live Action,” and while it may technically be true that the film is from their live-action division, it doesn’t take a scholar to look at the trailer and realize that there are no live-action performances onscreen”

Cartoon Brew emphasizes and adds: “It’s a mystery to us why the company is trying to gaslight audiences and convince them that this is a live-action film.”

IMDB: ALEXA 65

Indeed, anyone can see that the trailer is 100% animation (not even CGI), yet IMDB sheds some light on this argument.

According to the online database, the camera used to shot this film is ARRI ALEXA 65 and ARRI ALEXA IMAX (?). Of course there is no ARRI ALEXA IMAX but it’s logical that the 65 will be used and adapted to fit IMAX needs.

ALEXA 65 technology is being used by IMAX and ARRI has the ability to customize the ALEXA 65 system for usage on IMAX productions.

However, it’s important to note that this database is not 100% accurate, especially on this stage before release, and I believe that the tech spec will be updated as we are getting closer to the release of the movie.

Final thoughts

In my opinion, the argument in regard to live-action yes or no, is less relevant.

Seems that in The Lion King 2019 we are going to experience the African savannas in their tremendous glory, straight from the sensor of the 65.

  1. That is cgi. Animation is cgi, but not all cgi is animation. And if they used real locations then it would be considered live action
