Initial thoughts

First, it’s important to note that this chart demonstrates the winners only, as opposed to a much more comprehensive view of the total nominees. For instance, in the 78th Golden Globe Awards nominees, there was much higher diversity, including other camera manufacturers like RED Digital Cinema (Monstro), Blackmagic Design (URSA and Pocket 4K), and of course Sony (VENICE). However, this time we focused on the winning projects, and unfortunately, they comprised only ARRI cameras, with significant domination of the Mini LF, which never fails to deliver. Another admired piece of gear is the Panavision XL2 which shoots celluloid magic. The XL2 was combined with the ARRIFLEX by the one and only, Steven Spielberg, in The Fabelmans. Furthermore, a fascinating finding, is that all other digital cameras own large sensors. Hence, large format rules in that list, as in the Oscars 2023 camera list. We’ll end on a personal note — as we wish more cameras to be included and used by topnotch DPs.
