Sony BURANO: VENICE imagery in a ‘FX9 package’

The Sony CineAlta BURNAO was introduced yesterday. Y.M.CINEMA was invited to Sony’s facility at the famous Pinewood Studios to try and test the camera. From the first minute, we saw that the BURANO is a unique piece of motion picture camera, that was meticulously engineered to grant solo shooters the privilege of using a high-end cinema camera. You can think of it as a hybridization between FX9 to VENICE 2. It owns all the features professional indie filmmakers seek, without compromising on image quality (the VENICE look & feel of imagery). We’ll not mention any tech spec here. For that head to our article that comprehensively describes the tech stuff. In this piece, we’d want to show you short films and special projects shot on BURANO. BTW, in the picture below you can see the mastermind of the BURANO, Hara Yuki, who is the product manager – Chief Engineer. The camera wouldn’t exist without him!

Paired with VENICE

Sony’s goal is to allow DPs a second camera that can be perfectly paired with the acclaimed Sony VENICE, and especially the VENICE 2. Although those cameras don’t share the same sensor (only the same resolution), and the BURANO has an X-OCN LT version (which is 30% ‘less’ than what the VENICE 2 is capable of), the look was developed to be the same. Indeed, Sony made an experiment, and paired the BURANO with the VENICE 2 in a dance music video called “Original”. This dance music video was directed by Unjoo Moon and Academy Award-winning Director of Photography Dion Beebe ACS ASC. Moon and Beebe chose strong lighting and a dance film to test the BURANO’s sensor, and how it matches with the VENICE 2. According to their opinion, in the color grading suite can couldn’t tell which is which. Watch ‘Original’ below:

BURANO = CineAltaB

It appears that CineAltaB is a promotion name of BURANO used in China. This is the behind the scenes of Director Mu Deyuan (CNSC Chairman) and DOP Zhao Xiaoding (CNSC ASC) attempt to shoot action scenes in low light and high-speed moving scenes using BURANO, fully utilizing the compact body and AI focusing function, as well as the PL anti-shake function (We couldn’t find the final video):

More ‘Shot on BURANO’ docus

As the BURANO was released a few days ago, no large-scale projects were shot on it yet. However, a few BURANOs were loaned to top documentary filmmakers in order to shoot some magic. Explore these outstanding projects below, shot entirely on the BURANO:
