Finally, we can see some Komodo footage. The forthcoming RED new action camera was used to shoot the Hard Rock Big Game commercial directed by Michael Bay. The Komodo was used together with other RED cameras (Helium Bayhems and Monstro). Take a closer look at the commercial and try to identify the Komodo footage.

Shot by Michael Bay

Although this is not the first time Komodo has been used on a professional set, this is the first time Komodo footage is revealed. Michael Bay shot the commercial with his custom-made Komodo Bayhem, Helium Bayhem, and Monstro.  RED has been designing those specific models to be used by Bay in his high-end productions. Check out the BTS footage below from the set of the Hard Rock Big Game commercial.

Watch the commercial. Try to identify that Komodo footage:

Furthermore, Hard Rock has released a Behind The Scene video. We didn’t notice any Komodo there. Check it out below:

Komodo on high-end productions

As we wrote before, the Komodo is RED’s most affordable option, and it’s dedicated to the Run&Gun shooting style that suits many independent content creators. However, we know that productions are utilizing the Komodo (currently in the production phase and still filming) like “Red Notice” directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber and The Christmas Chronicles 2 directed by Chris Columbus. Furthermore, the Komodo was used to shoot Steven Soderbergh’s Let Them All Talk as the primary camera. Check out some BTS shots (credit: Jarred Land Instagram).

The Komodo and Cine Gear 2020

The development of this new camera by RED is being updated via the company’s president Instagram page, Jarred Land. There are no releases to the press what so ever. As stated by Jarred:: “I just approved the last mechanical update to Komodo, and it was an important one. Time to start up the machines, kick-off tooling, and start narrowing in on a date. Lots to still do.. but this was an important week for Komodo. Early next week, we will be releasing mechanical drawings and 3D models to our approved 3rd party partners so everyone can start making their own bits and pieces and be ready when we are”. That means we should expect the release of the final spec in a month or two. Pre-orders are expected in the mid of 2020. However, all of that are assumptions only. We believe that there is a good chance that RED will utilize the forthcoming Cine Gear stage to present the Komodo to the public. We’ll keep you posted, so stay tuned.
