Canon EOS R3: Made for speed

The Canon EOS R3 was designed to meet the demand of sports photographers that also like to shoot professionally-looking videos. According to Canon, this camera was designed and developed to be fast and efficient. This is not a flagship, but hybridization between the might 1D X Mark III, to the elite mirrors R5, as stated by Canon: “Landing between the robust EOS R5 and Canon’s flagship EOS-1D X Mark III, the Canon EOS R3 will be designed to satisfy the most demanding expectations in a professional camera — emphasizing speed, performance, and reliability”.

Here’re the R3 highlights

Stacked Sensor: Minimization of rolling-shutter artifacts

The R3 is armed with Canon’s first full-frame, back-illuminated stacked CMOS image sensor. According to Canon, this sensor is supposed to deliver substantially faster read-out speeds, and produce much lower “rolling shutter” distortion than previous EOS models.

Electronic Shutter

Electronic Shutter operation will take full advantage of the EOS R3’s sensor design. With its superb read-out speeds, continuous shooting up to 30 fps, with full AF, in all auto-exposure shooting modes, will be available with the EOS R3.

Autofocus

Using Deep Learning technology, the upcoming EOS R3 will offer enhanced AF performance and tracking capabilities, with even better face-, eye-, head- and body detection. And, the EOS R3 will add a new type of subject recognition, for its AF system. Also, for the first time in an EOS R series camera, you will now be able to set the focus point in the viewfinder, by simply looking at it, for incredibly fast changes in where the camera focuses, or to set the initial point from which the EOS R3’s AF system will track moving subjects.

Rugged Body

Canon’s upcoming EOS R3 will carry forward the integrated vertical grip similar to the 1D series cameras, emphasizing both horizontal and vertical handling for challenging shooting situations. Weather resistance and durability will equal Canon’s professional EOS-1D X Mark III camera. Indeed, the images published by Nokishita demonstrate this structure.

Price and availability

The price is yet to be announced. However, rumors suggest that the price will be below $6,000. Nevertheless, in my personal opinion, it will be lower than that, since it’s not a flagship camera by definition. Anyway, the EOS R3 is already being listed on the Adorama website, so you can add it to your wish list. Stay tuned as we’ll keep you posted regarding more news and info.

    • It looks to me, it’s another failed try to get to the level of the almighty Sony A1.

      • The A1 is not even even competing with the R5 when comes to price and what you get for your $$. The A1 cost twice for just a tiny improvement. What’s failing is your insight
