Although there’s no trailer for the sequel of the 2019 film ‘Joker’, titled Joker: Folie à Deux, we are pretty sure it will be an absolute masterpiece, not less than the first Joker. Why? Because the same team is in the making: Director Todd Phillips, and DP Lawrence Sher. The camera is the mighty ARRI ALEXA 65, which is the same camera that shot Joker 1.

Joker: Folie à Deux

Joker: Folie à Deux a is an upcoming American musical thriller film directed by Todd Phillips, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Scott Silver. Based on DC Comics characters, the film is the sequel to Joker (2019) and stars Joaquin Phoenix, reprising his role as the Joker, and Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn. It is produced by Warner Bros. Pictures and DC Studios in association with Village Roadshow Pictures, Bron Creative, and Joint Effort. Principal photography took place in Los Angeles, New York, and Cedar Grove, New Jersey, from December 2022 to April 2023, as stated by Phillips: “That’s a wrap! Thanks to these two (Phoenix and Lady Gaga) + the entire cast, and the BEST crew that the film industry has to offer. From top to bottom. Gonna crawl into a cave now (edit room) and put it all together”. The Director of Photography is Lawrence Sher who also shot the first Joker. Here’re a few footage shared by Phillips:

Same cinematography as Joker [1]

Principal photography began on December 10, 2022, with Phillips releasing a first look on his Instagram account and Lawrence Sher serving as cinematographer who also shot the first Joker. Sher cited Francis Ford Coppola’s One From the Heart (1982) as a source of visual inspiration for the film. Exterior filming occurred in Los Angeles and New York by March 2023. Lady Gaga had filmed scenes with a crowd of extras demanding Joker’s arrest outside of the New York County Courthouse, which had led some people nearby to mistake it for the arrest of Donald Trump following his first indictment. Arkham Asylum scenes were filmed at the abandoned Essex County Isolation Hospital in New Jersey. In April 2023, filming took place at the “Joker Stairs”, the stairway on West 167th Street in the Bronx featured prominently in the first film. Here are a few BTS footage. Some of them are filmed on the famous ‘Joker stairs’:

The camera Sher used for the Joker 2 is the ARRI ALEXA 65. As stated by ARRI Rental: “’Joker: Folie à Deux’ Lawrence Sher ASC continued with the 65 mm format on the ALEXA 65. Supplied by ARRI Rental Los Angeles”. It’s intriguing to see that the team utilized this 65 beast by pairing it with a stabilizer gimbal dedicated to more compact cameras. We wonder if they used the ARRI 65 on that, or another more packed large sensor camera, like the ARRI Mini LF. These two cameras have a whole different look due to the size of the sensor (The ARRI 65 has a much bigger sensor than the Mini LF). Thus, it would be a very unique ARRI 65 camera setup for kinetic shots. There’s no info regarding lenses (the first Joker was filmed on ARRI DNA glass). Joker: Folie à Deux is scheduled to be released in the United States on October 4, 2024, by Warner Bros. Pictures. Looking forward to the trailer.
