Watch: Shot on Fujifilm GFX100 II Paired With Cooke Anamorphic FF+ SF

Director of Photography Joseph Eriksson shot the short film “The Blank” on Fujifilm’s new flagship, the GFX100 II. This medium format small mirrorless was paired with the mighty Cooke Anamorphic FF+ SF (Special Flare) lenses. Watch the result below.

Fujifilm GFX100 II: The fastest GFX large sensor model

The recently announced GFX100 II is the new flagship by Fujifilm but with a more affordable price than the GFX100. The camera was developed for filmmakers who love the look & feel of a large sensor and don’t want to break the bank (or back). The GFX100 II is armed with a 55mm large-format image sensor, that is nearly 1.7x larger than the 35mm image sensors found in full-frame cameras. This newly developed 102-megapixel high-speed image sensor, output data to the latest 5th generation X-Processor 5 image processing engine. That combination doubles the signal readout speed compared to the previous GFX models. That grants the ability to shoot high-speed, continuous shutter mode, autofocus (AF), and video. Additionally, the GFX 100 II is the first GFX that can record internally ProRes 4:2:2, 10-bit video at 4K/60p and 8K/30p.

Medium format: 2nd largest sensor behind ALEXA 65

It’s important to note that the new Fujifilm GFX100 II is not exactly a medium format camera by definition, but more like a very large sensor camera. For comparison, The ARRI ALEXA 65 has the largest sensor of all professional cinema cameras. Hence, the GFX100 II sensor sits in between this and the Super 35. However, it’s quite large so you can get your desired shallow DOF very easily, and with a very compact form factor, which is cool.

Shot on GFX100 II and Cooke Anamorphic FF+

Director of Photography Joseph Eriksson from Sweden shot the short film “The Blank” on the GFX100 II paired with Cooke Anamorphic FF+ SF (Special Flare) glass. That was a very artistic and smart choice, since those Cooke lenses are characterized by a contemporary ‘Cooke Look’ feel, while still producing diverse imagery. DPs tell that these lenses produce excellent background separation, render very unique oval bokeh, and soften up at the edges of the frame. Moreover, the Cooke Anamorphic FF+ fills out large sensors quite nicely with a 1.8x squeeze, which was utilized by Eriksson on the GFX100 II. Additionally, we found that Eriksson shot mainly with the 75mm, which at that sensor size, and being anamorphic, is a very versatile and expressive focal length. The image pretty much speaks for itself. Check out the BTS footage below:
