Golden Globe Awards symbolizes excellence in film and television

The Golden Globe Awards, which is a significant part of the film industry’s awards season, recognizes excellence in film and television, both domestic and foreign. The Golden Globe Awards constitutes another major milestone in the race after the Academy Awards (aka The Oscar).

Golden Globe Awards: Facts

We searched into Wikipedia and found some interesting facts regarding the Golden Globe Awards and the qualification process.

1. Films must be at least 70 minutes and released for at least a seven-day run in the Greater Los Angeles area (in theaters, or streaming).
2.  There is no limit to the number of submitted films from a given country
3. For the Best Foreign Language Film category, at least 51 percent of the dialogue must be in a language other than English.
4. A TV program must air in the United States between the prime time hours to get into the process.
5. The broadcast of the Golden Globe Awards, telecast to 167 countries worldwide, generally ranks as the third most-watched awards show each year, behind only the Oscars and the Grammy Awards.

There is no doubt that the Golden Globe Awards combine to form a valid part of the filtration process to choose the best films of the year.

Discussion and insights

ARRI rules

Generally speaking, there is nothing new under the sun. ARRI rules. The other major camera manufacturers are Panavision, RED, Sony, Panasonic, and Aaton. There is much similarity to the Pre-Oscar chart, which is almost identical. Furthermore, it’s nice to explore Aaton film cameras on nearly every prestige list of nominees.

The popularity of large-format

One of the insights is the heavy presence of large format cameras in the list. The brand new ALEXA Mini LF was used only once. However, I’m pretty sure they will conquer those lists in the next years. Nevertheless, you can explore the ALEXA 65 in the second place right after the ALEXA Mini, which dominates in almost every list of nominees. The ARRI Mini is the weapon of choice of many DPs and one of the best alternatives to super 35 imagery. Anyway, there is a good chance that the Mini LF will take the first place. We’ll have to wait till next awards season to verify that. Of course, it’s not just about replacing the camera. It’s total different imagery, and it will be interesting to explore if DPs and directors would embrace that look over Super 35.  

RED

RED is having a hard time to get a decent place in the mainstream of awards winning productions. The reasons for that are unknown. RED pushes the technology of cinema cameras forward, and this company never stops inventing. RED is responsible for the rise of resolution and sensor size, which means RED has a significant impact on the whole industry. However, for some reason, DPs prefer ARRI. OF course, it could change from end to end. I do think that RED is an outstanding company that takes risks in this conservative industry, and thus, it deserves more.

The film is not dead

For those of you who thought that film is gone, well, it’s not! The data clearly shows that. It seems that many DPs still prefer film. Take a look at the chart below that demonstrates the segmentation of film vs. digital concerning the Golden Globe Awards nominees.

The pie pretty much speaks for itself. In my opinion, that’s the most meaningful exploration regarding the cameras been used. Seeing those old film cameras in the list is indeed a pleasant sight to the eye.
