GoPro says its interchangeable-lens 8K compact cinema camera (MISSION 1 Pro ILS) will support more than 300 Micro Four Thirds lenses, while a new iPhone and iPad app will provide live focusing and remote camera control.
MISSION 1 PRO ILS will launch in September
GoPro has confirmed that the MISSION 1 PRO ILS will launch in September, bringing the interchangeable-lens version of its new MISSION 1 platform to market alongside a dedicated monitoring application for iPhone and iPad. During GoPro’s Q2 FY2026 earnings call, CEO Nicholas Woodman provided additional details about the camera and introduced the Mission Monitor app, which is designed to turn an Apple mobile device into a larger viewing and control interface for the MISSION 1 PRO ILS. The combination gives a clearer picture of how GoPro intends the camera to be used. The MISSION 1 PRO ILS is not simply an action camera with a removable lens mount. GoPro is positioning it as a compact production camera aimed at enthusiasts, prosumers, and professional users who need access to interchangeable optics without abandoning the small form factor and electronic stabilization associated with the brand.

According to Woodman, the MISSION 1 PRO ILS will support more than 300 readily available Micro Four Thirds lenses. That lens ecosystem is central to the concept. Instead of designing a proprietary lens system around the camera, GoPro is entering an established mount with a large selection of primes, zooms, compact lenses, specialty optics, and adapters already available. GoPro combines that flexibility with its in-camera HyperSmooth stabilization. Mission Monitor turns the iPhone and iPad into production tools
The newly announced Mission Monitor app adds another piece to that strategy. The application will provide a live camera preview on an iPhone or iPad, allowing users to check framing and focus on a larger display than the camera itself can provide. GoPro says the app will also include composition overlays and remote camera controls for framing, exposure, and recording. Mission Monitor is scheduled to arrive on Apple’s App Store in September, alongside the MISSION 1 PRO ILS launch. For a compact camera, this type of external monitoring option is particularly relevant. Small bodies are useful when the camera needs to be placed in restricted locations, mounted to vehicles, used on compact rigs, or operated where a conventional cinema-camera configuration becomes cumbersome. An iPhone or iPad can provide a larger viewing surface without necessarily requiring the camera body itself to become larger. It also changes the role of GoPro’s mobile software. Rather than being limited to media transfer, setup, or consumer-oriented camera control, Mission Monitor is being described around production tasks such as exposure, composition, focus confirmation, and remote operation.

Woodman’s comments during the earnings call are as relevant as the new app itself. He described the MISSION 1 PRO ILS as a product capable of attracting creators who have not previously considered using a GoPro because the company did not have the appropriate camera for them. GoPro already has a well-established position in action and adventure capture. The MISSION 1 PRO ILS is attempting something different: keeping the durability, compact dimensions, and HyperSmooth technology associated with GoPro while adding the lens flexibility and monitoring workflow expected from a more production-oriented camera. Micro Four Thirds is particularly suited to that objective because the mount provides access to a broad lens catalog without forcing GoPro to build an optical ecosystem from scratch. At that point, the more important question will move beyond specifications: whether GoPro’s combination of 8K capture, interchangeable Micro Four Thirds lenses, HyperSmooth stabilization, and mobile monitoring can make the MISSION 1 PRO ILS useful enough to earn a place on professional sets outside the traditional GoPro workflow.
