Oscar 2020 (92nd Academy Awards) cameras

We’ve collected the data regarding the cameras and lenses that shot the 92nd Academy Awards Best Picture and Cinematography nominees. The data was collected via IMDB Tech Spec and was based on the ten nominees. Generally speaking, there are no surprises here compared to last year (Oscar 2019). ARRI dominates the list as the previous year. Furthermore, the data is very similar to the Theatrical Release category of the 34th ASC Awards. Additionally, there is some similarity to the 29 Motion Picture nominees of the 77th Golden Globe Awards excluding cameras like Venice, Varicam, and Monstro. Also, the segmentation of the Super35 vs. large sensor was not changed as much. However, RED deserves some positive feedback here since the Helium penetrates this prestigious list. Let’s explore the list below.

Update: After a bit more research, it turns out that RED has been nominated before (Academy Awards 2011 ) with the films “The Social Network “and “Winter’s Bone” which both of them were shot on the RED One. Also “Room” (Academy Awards 2016) and “Lion” (Academy Awards 2017) that were shot on the RED Epic.

Film vs. Digital segmentation: Film wins!

One of the most intriguing and fascinating facts is the decent presence of film cameras on that list. Logically, there is nothing to be surprised about since film cameras still produce stunning imagery, even comparing to the most modern and sophisticated digital sensors, and indeed, the Academy loves them. Nevertheless, this year the segmentation of film cameras was significantly higher. Statistically speaking, the film wins! Explore the graph below that demonstrates this segmentation.
