The RED Komodo-X which is the new cinema camera from RED Digital Cinema, will start shipping on the upcoming Tuesday (only ST version). The Komodo-X incorporates a Super 35 sensor and is capable of shooting 6K at 80 frames per second. The camera has a V-Mount and compatibility with DSMC3 monitors. More details are below.

Just a few days ago, RED’s CEO Jarred Land, teased a new camera during Scott Balkum’s livestream. The camera is named Komodo-X as it looks very similar to the Komodo, and incorporates a global shutter Super 35mm sensor. The camera is more powerful and capable compared to the first Komodo, and it seems a bit bigger. It has a locking RF Mount, front side record button, and CFexpress (CFx) media compatibility. Moreover, new photos published by Land, reveal more details.

6K at 80fps, and DSMC3 RED Touch 7″ compatibility

Land posted a picture of the screen and body, indicating a few things. First, the Komodo-X can shoot 6K 17:9 at 80 frames per second. Furthermore, it owns a V-Mount solution for better power consumption. Moreover, DSMC3 monitors can be attached directly to the upper pins near the screen. That allows you to connect a monitor without cables and also utilize existing DSMC3 RED Touch 7″ LCD Monitors. Hence, the Komodo-X will merge better into the DSMC3 ecosystem. Also, the Komodo-X features improved audio performance. In terms of design, the size of the screen is about the same as the 1st Komodo. However, the Komodo-X is lengthier than the first Komodo, mainly because of the V-mount. Also, the antenna is located at the same spot as on Raptor: “It works better there. The (1st) Komodo antenna is tucked in on the side for air/crash/space” Land explained.

A new sensor?

As for the sensor, it might be a completely new sensor, but we’re not so sure about that. The reason for a new sensor is to improve the dynamic range of the camera. If so, the Komodo-X’s imagery can be matched more easily to the Raptor. The ST (Stormtrooper – white) version of the Komodo-X starts shipping on next Tuesday. The camera will be officially presented on Monday. We guess we see a lot of Komodo-X in the upcoming Cine Gear Expo. No info about the price of the Komdo-X. However, we guess the price sits between $8,000-$9,000 USD. That will be a good range between the Komodo, Komodo-X, Raptor S35, and Raptor VV.

  1. Jarred confirmed the price for both the stormtrooper and the black version to be $9,995

  2. Is he rushing to get this out because the Canon box cameras are going to have internal ND filters and be generally better cameras?
