Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K
The MAVO EDGE 8K is the new large-format 8K cine camera from Kinefinity. This carbon fiber beast was announced back in April with an affordable price of $12,000. The camera was supposed to be released months ago, however, due to further validations regarding the development phase, the release has been delayed. Moreover, at the beginning of this month, the company has declared another delay, and more importantly, the elimination of its ProRes RAW output, due to a patent war. Nevertheless, Kinefinity has published some exciting first footage of the camera that shows its capabilities. And yes, the imagery is stunning and reminds the ALEXA look.
MAVO Edge first footage
This is the teaser trailer of Wake up which is the first reel shot on whole new Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K. It was directed by Hanbei Zhang and shot by cinematographer Bocheng Wan. There’s no info about the codec used to shoot the video. However, we can assume that the Apple ProRes4444/XQ was chosen for the best image quality. We’re expecting the camera to be released on March 23. The full short film will be released on that date as well.

What do you think about the Kinefinity MAVO Edge 8K image quality? Comment below.
The skintones and shadows look nice but the harsh highlight clipping in the final shot cause for concern. I imagin a RED or ARRI would have smoother highlight rolloff in that situation. It’s difficult to know for sure since I don’t know the intensity of the light. I would definitely be interested in seeing how the sensor performs in bright daylight conditions shooting some puffy clouds!
