As the development of DaVinci Resolve, pro industry standard color grading software is sprinting like no tomorrow, today a new version has pushed to users. Obviously the new version is improved and based on users feedback, mainly in regard to editing capabilities of the software. Yes, DV Resolve is an award winning masterpiece and Netflix approved, in term of color grading, but lacks the ability in editing due to dropping frames phenomena and crushing issues. This version development was focused on the editing capabilities of the software. Let’s have a look.

Timeline: more responsive trimming

Resolve 15.2 has a dramatically improved edit timeline that now draws at a higher frame rate for even more responsive and precise trimming. You’ll also see new animations as clips slide in and out of position to show you exactly how different types of edits affect the timeline.

Keyboard customization

Keyboard customization has been redesigned with a new visual interface, there’s a new keyword dictionary tool for managing metadata keywords, duplicate frame detection, clip usage indicators in the media pool, simplified timecode entry, improved compound and nested timeline editing. You can now edit audio transitions at the subframe level on the Edit page and gang faders together on the Fairlight page.

Media pool: FPCX style Icon view

The icons on media pool have much more friendly graphical user interface, like FCPX. By the way, advanced and straightforward interface it’s something that Apple Final Cut Pro X known for.  Now seems DV Resolve has done the same.

Final thoughts

DaVinci Resolve is improving and enhancing rapidly on a month to month basis, and that’s wonderful. That’s how a software should be developed. A pure software development cycle.

Seems that the development focuses on elevating the editing potential and capabilities of DV Resolve. In my opinion the key is speed when dealing with a complex timeline (feature film for example). Therefore I don’t think that DV Resolve is ready for that yet, but it’s getting there.
