Two months after the production model was spotted, Atlas Lens Co. has officially introduced the lens at Cine Gear. The 25mm T2 Orion Series 2X Anamorphic Prime has been in development for a couple of years, and now it’s available for order, with a tag price that is significantly higher than the other Orions.

25mm T2 Orion Series 2X Anamorphic

According to Atlas, the new 25mm T2 is characterized by an extremely low distortion for an incredibly wide lens. The lens covers traditional anamorphic 4:3 film and digital sensor formats up to 24.89mm x 18.66mm, has a 133º horizontal field-of-view with 2x anamorphic squeeze. Furthermore, like other Orions, the 25mm covers full-frame formats edge-to-edge with the Atlas 1.6x LF Extender. Regarding imagery, the lens complements the Orion Series family of lenses (32/40/50/65/80/100).

The youngest Orion sister, and the most expensive

The 25mm shares the same t-stop (T2-T16) as the other lenses in the series. The minimum focus point is 1.5 feet which is the lowest among the other Orion anamorphic lenses. The lens owns the largest diameter (136mm). However, the big difference is the price. The 25mm Orion Series Anamorphic Prime costs $15,000, and that’s not affordable anymore.

For comparison, here’re the prices of all Atlas Orions:

  1. 25mm Orion Series Anamorphic Prime: $15,000
  2. 32mm Orion Series Anamorphic Prime: $10,000
  3. 40mm Orion Series Anamorphic Prime: $9,000
  4. 50mm Orion Series Anamorphic Prime: $9,000
  5. 65mm Orion Series Anamorphic Prime: $9,000
  6. 80mm Orion Series Anamorphic Prime: $9,000
  7. 100mm Orion Series Anamorphic Prime: $9,000

A deposit of $5,000 must be made due at checkout.

Wide anamorphics

Wide anamorphic glass is not hugely common but some do exist. For instance, there’s the Cooke 25mm T2.3 Anamorphic/i lens (price: $29,900) which I’ve hardly found any footage shot with it.

If you ever wondered about the imagery you get from a wide anamorphic, check out the video below which is mostly shot on the Atlas Orion 25mm, paired with the RED Komodo.

Final insights

The Atlas Orion 25mm 2X Anamorphic is a phenomenal piece of glass, and moreover, it’s quite rare too, as wide anamorphic are barely found. The lens produces outstanding imagery. Nevertheless, the price is steep. The first anamorphics from Atlas were priced at $8,000. Then the company raised the price by $1,000. The 25mm costs 50% more than the most expensive Orion (32mm). On the other hand, try to find another 25mm 2X anamorphic and you’ll reveal that it’s hard since this focal length is pretty rare.
