This is the quote from the Q2 2022 IMAX Corporation Conference Call aired today, although Top Gun: Maverick wasn’t filmed with real IMAX cameras. Also, the IMAX movies’ timeline has been presented. And… Oppenheimer teaser has been released. Read all this below with more IMAX news.
IMAX sets new heights — thx to Sony VENICE
IMAX has just published its Q2 2022 Corporation Conference Call. Although no word on the next generation of IMAX cameras that are in development, there’re a few intriguing mentions there. First, IMAX declares that Top Gun: Maverick has brought the company to new heights, which means:
- Biggest Memorial Day Weekend Opening Ever on a Global basis for IMAX
- 12th Highest Grossing IMAX title of all time at $98 million GBO and counting
- 12% opening weekend indexing globally from only 2% of opening weekend screens
- 10th Highest Grossing IMAX title of all time in North America with 14.3% opening weekend indexing.
That is an awe-inspiring achievement. However, the movie was not filmed with true IMAX cameras (“Shot With IMAX Film Cameras”) but with IMAX-Certified cameras, which are basically high-end-large-sensor digital cinema cameras that were certified by IMAX. In that case, it is the Sony VENICE (1). Indeed, the film was getting a super solid marketing boost from Tom Cruise himself. Nevertheless, it was so good (read our review) and so… IMAX-worthy that we are not surprised by this impressive achievement. Furthermore, Top Gun: Maverick is proof that the “Filmed in IMAX” program works well… very well, with the goal of “Blockbusterization” in order to enhance the IMAX business model.
Timeline of Blockbuster Releases (2022-2025)
Other attractive slides presented on the Call were the pipeline of blockbuster releases for IMAX from 2022 to 2025. Check them out below (note that little film camera icon underneath the title which symbolizes that the film was shot on real IMAX film cameras, as opposed to certified digital cinema cameras):
Oppenheimer (live?) teaser released
Another fascinating IMAX news is the release of the anticipated Nolan’s masterpiece — Oppenheimer. Nolan loves to play with time, and this teaser is no different. It’s a live teaser with a countdown to the release of the film. Watch it below:
Moreover, we wrote about Oppenheimer and what makes it unique because a black and white 65mm film stock was used to shoot certain scenes. The film was shot by acclaimed cinematographer and Nolan’s cinematic partner Hoyte Van Hoytema, which has a vast experience with IMAX film cameras. At the end of the trailer we are able to notice a big title of “Shot With IMAX Film Cameras”, and if we’re not mistaken, this is the first time (or second) that IMAX emphasizes this at the end of the trailer and that in order to differentiate it from being shot with IMAX Certified cameras. Here’s the slide at the end of the teaser:
BTW, as a tribute to the mighty 65mm format, we’ve created the Y.M.CINEMA 65 which is a perfect gift for cinephiles — explore it on our website.
