Sony FX3 Jumps to $4,299: A 2021 Camera Just Got More Expensive in 2026

Sony’s compact Cinema Line workhorse just became more expensive. The Sony FX3A is now listed at $4,298 on Amazon and B&H, while Sony’s own US store lists the camera at $4,299.99. That is a significant jump for a camera platform that was originally announced back in 2021 as the FX3, and later refreshed as the FX3A with minor hardware updates. Now you have to pay more. Why?

The FX3 price goes up

The Sony FX3A is now being sold on Amazon for $4,298, according to the current listing. The older FX3 SKU is shown nearby at $4,198, while the FX3A sits $100 higher. B&H also lists the FX3A at $4,298, and Sony’s official US store lists the ILME FX3A at $4,299.99. In other words, this does not look like a random Amazon pricing glitch. It looks like the new authorized US price level for the FX3A. That is the surprising part. We are not talking about a brand-new generation camera. We are talking about the FX3 platform, which was introduced in February 2021 as Sony’s most compact Cinema Line camera. The FX3A is a refreshed SKU, but the core imaging engine remains fundamentally the same: a 12.1MP full-frame Exmor R sensor, UHD 4K up to 120fps, 10-bit 4:2:2 internal recording, 16-bit RAW output, and the compact fan-cooled body that made the FX3 so popular among solo operators, documentary shooters, gimbal users, and hybrid cinema creators.

A 10% jump for a five-year-old cinema camera

The math is straightforward. The FX3A was recently seen around the $3,898 range at major retailers. The new $4,298 price represents a $400 increase, which equals roughly 10.3%. That is a notable jump in a market where camera bodies usually lose value over time, especially after several years on the shelf. This is what makes the story interesting. The FX3 is not obsolete. Far from it. It is still one of Sony’s most useful cinema hybrids. But it is also a 2021 camera at heart. In 2026, buyers are already expecting the next FX body, possibly an FX3 successor or a new ILME FX camera positioned between the FX3 and higher-end Cinema Line tools. Instead, the existing FX3A just became more expensive.

Why did Sony raise the price?

The most likely reason is not demand hype. It is pricing pressure in the US market. Sony camera and lens prices have already been affected by US price hikes, with DPReview reporting Sony price increases across cameras and lenses in 2025 under its “Tariff Watch” coverage. The FX3A’s move to $4,298 fits that broader pattern of camera gear becoming more expensive in the US rather than cheaper. This is not unique to Sony. The entire imaging industry has been dealing with higher manufacturing costs, shifting logistics, tariffs, currency pressure, and weaker camera volumes. But Sony’s case is especially visible because its Cinema Line cameras are widely used by creators, small production houses, YouTubers, documentary shooters, and independent filmmakers. A $400 jump on the FX3A is not a small bump. It changes the buying calculation.

The irony: the FX3 is more expensive while the successor is expected

The timing is what makes this price jump even more interesting. Sony is expected to expand its Cinema Line again, and rumors around new FX models have been circulating heavily. The FX3 is one of the most successful compact cinema cameras Sony has ever made, so a successor feels inevitable. But instead of seeing aggressive discounts before a next-generation model, the US market is seeing the opposite: the refreshed FX3A is being pushed upward. For Sony, this may be a way to preserve margins. For buyers, it creates hesitation. Should you buy the FX3A now at $4,299? Should you wait for the next FX camera? Or should you look at alternatives that offer newer specs for less money?
