In continuous (or as a result) to the Jinnimag-RED saga, RED just dropped its Mini-Mags prices significantly. The price drop is relevant (for now) to the 480 GB and 960 GB Mini-Mags. The new prices are $1,450 for the 480 GB and $2,350 for the 960 GB.

RED Mini-Mags: Consumer-based off the shelf SSD

For those who are living inside a deep cave and are not familiar with the so-called dramatic discussion/ novel between RED and Jinnimag, refer to this article to get updated. Make the story short (if it’s possible), Jinnimag has demonstrated that RED Min-Mags are made from a consumer-based off the shelf SSD that costs no more than $250.

Engineering expenses and warranty

RED claimed that the calculation of the price of the Mini-Mags are much complicated than that and includes patents, engineering expenses, and warranty. The noise caused by the RED-Jinnimag debate was expanded beyond any proportion to all forums (REDUser and FB altogether).

As a result of these epic discussions, Jarred, RED President made a promise to drop the prices of the Mini-Mags: “We lowered prices on media last year as well because of that… I am just accelerating the schedule because so many people seem so upset over all this which still surprises me. We can go further. That’s up to all of you, but the upcoming camera/accessory prices will need to go up as a result of it.”

Price reduction of more than 20 percent

So there you go. Prices before: $1,850 for the 480 GB and $2,950 for the 960 GB. Prices after: $1,450 for the 480 GB and $2,350 for the 960 GB, which means more than 20% drop in price.

What’s next?

According to Jarred’s statement, the price reduction of the Mni-Mags will be rolled to other components. Let’s see how it will affect other prices related to the RED’s products and ecosystem. We’ll get you posted.

  1. This kind of arrogance is usually the first step towards the beginning of the end of an era – in this case a RED one.
