Phantom T1340

The Phantom T1340 is a compact high-speed imaging tool.  A variety of features increase the workflow flexibility and maximum connectivity of the camera allowing it to interface with advanced systems found in research and industrial testing, within a small and compact housing. The Phantom T1340 reaches 3,270 FPS at a full resolution of 2048×1952. Also, the T1340 features CineMag compatibility and On-Camera controls for expanded workflow possibilities.

Phantom T1340 highlights

  1. Maximum data rate: 13 Gpx/sec
  2. Maximum resolution: 2048 x 1952 in 3,270 fps
  3. Maximum FPS: 113,510 at 640X8 resolution (Explore the maximum frame-rates table in the spec document below)
  4. Sensor: Global shutter CMOS
  5. Sensor size: 27.6 mm x 26.3 mm; 38mm diagonal
  6. Bit-depth: 12-bit
  7. Record times: 7.6 seconds at maximum frame rate, 12 bits, 2048 x 1952 resolution and into maximum internal memory. (Longer record times are possible at reduced resolutions and when recording directly to a CineMag at lower frame rates)
  8. Lens mounts: Interchangeable lens mounts (Nikon, PL, C, M42, and Canon EF with Electronic control)
  9. Weight: 10 lbs, 4.5 kg

Media

The Phantom T1340 utilizes CineMag (up to 8 TB) which is compatible with Flex4K, UHS, and T-Series camera models. The Phantom CineMag is a high-speed solid-state storage module and differs significantly from a traditional hard drive or solid-state disk in that there is no file system. PCC (Phantom Camera Control ) software is required to download Cine Raw files, which can be controlled through an Ethernet connection with the camera body or by using a dedicated CineStation IV. The CineMag workflow makes the camera a viable option for a ‘cinema workflow’.

Price

The T1340 is defined by Vision Research as one of its “Premium cameras”, and thus the pricing starts at about $80,000 USD and goes up based on memory and other options.

Initial thoughts

Basically, the T1340 model was developed for industrial imaging (motion analysis for research and test). It was not intended for cinema. However Phantom cameras have historically been used in cinema applications specifically as high-speed cameras and this will be the same for the T1340 model. According to Vision Research, the 2K image quality is very good especially when compared to other industrial cameras, so they definitely believe it is relevant for the film industry as well. Unfortunately, Vision Research doesn’t have relevant footage to share yet. Nevertheless, the RAW output of the Phantoms is truly amazing and it’s considered the best option when ultra-high-speed cinematic imagery is required.
